1999 Evo pinion gear

I bought a 1999 HD with an aftermarket cam already in it and the cam gear was welded on. I put in a different cam and it whines pretty loudly at about 2800 RPM.

The easiest and cheapest thing would be for me to change the pinion gear for a smaller one, but can't seem to find what the most common stock gear size was.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?

If the aftermarket cam you put in your engine has a gear you can remove, remove it and get a factory late style harley gear installed on your cam by a PROFESSIONAL . The gear pitch is different on tha late style cam gear, look at the cam gear face it will have a single groove or double groove the single groove is the early style and the double groove is for the late style. We have never seen an aftermarket cam come with a late style gear on it from the manufacture.

Most aftermarket cams come with a red gear. If you look in Andrew's catalog [or maybe on their website] it shows how to measure your gear. Getting this measurement is the best way to fit a new pinion gear. Like DB said take it to a shop that knows how to do this. It's not hard & will save you time & money in the long run.
You said your cam had the gear welded on. Was it a Redshift?

The cam that came in the bike was a Red Shift, but too big for what I need. I put in a Comp Cams with the power band in a more realistic range.

I knew HD made two general styles of pinion gear, 1993 and newer and 1992 and older. I didn't know there were different cam gears, other than the diameter of the camshaft where the gear presses on.

I'm not sure that pressing on a stock HD cam gear will work. It's been too long since I had a stock cam in to know the stock ID of the gear. I ordered the Comp Cams cam without gear hoping to press on a Crane Cams gear that I already have. The inside diameter of the Crane gear is too small to fit the Comp Cams shaft, so I ordered a gear from Comp. Somewhere I read that Comp Cams uses the red gear, so if that is true then something is not quite right here. Could be Comp, could be Crane. Maybe someone with weigh in and let me know which one is the red headed stepchild.

I have a couple of gauge pins coming in, but they aren't a lot of use without knowing what the original cam was, or either the stock pinion gear size that was mostly used. As with the red cam gear, if I knew which pinion gear was normally installed I can go down a size or two.

I had hoped that HD mostly put in a certain pinion gear and I could order one a couple of sizes smaller to shorten the down time. Looks like I will have to mike it when the gauge pins come in and then order a smaller one.

There are three pinion gears types for evos, pre'89. 90-92, and '93 and up. The most common size is red. I would measure yours with the pins, and then check the appropriate year manual, and it will give you a P/N for the right pinion gear to run with your size cam gear.

I would NOT run a whiny gear for any length of time. A clicking gear won't hurt you, but a whining gear will. Most any shop should be willing to measure your cam gear and tell you the appropriate pinion gear, I would for free.

As for puttin cam in,,the pinion must be matched to the cam gear. The size of the gear is determined by measuring the gear with the pins..In 92 and up the pins used are.108..There are many sops that just put in the cam and let it whine or slop around..This is HD manual stuff..The pinion gears are colour coded for ease..
