1997 EFI roadking

I'm about to step up and buy one of these, having sold my 95" FXSTi last month.

I need educating, never owned an evo.

It's a bone stock bike, with 10K miles on it. It rides nice but could do with a little 'more'.

What would be the first improvements?
Whats the efi like on this year?

Thats a great motorcycle to own. Mine is an 1998 Police model that Ive had for many years and has proven to be a keeper. Leave the engine and fuel system alone except for the cam, go with the EV27.
Just my honest opinion

Isn't there a need to change the fueling when changing the cams?

I was looking at a Power Commander, but the download maps are limited and most are for stage 1 ECU.

The fuel pack or similar would have been the next option.

Wood 6, or Andrews 27, and surface the heads -.060". Tune.
IF you do this, you may want to gasket the cylinder bases as they were very leak-prone.(especially the rear) Cometic's.

Right.
Looking at a shopping list for a trip to the US next month.
  • Wide Open Plastics batwing
  • Workshop manual.
  • Torrington IPB
  • EV27 cam

Obviosly gaskets as well.

I am tempted with some new slip-ons, perhaps S&S.

Can I get away with the cam and not alter the fueling or do I need a DFO?

Another alternative that comes to mind is taking the ECM off the bike and taking it with me, getting a dealer to flash it Stage 1, can it be done with the ECM off the bike?
