Flywheel Recommendations

Looking to do a 96" stroker on my 99 evo. Is there anything wrong with the Ultima crank assemblies vs say an S&S? This is not a strip type bike. More of a local bar hopper. The S&S rods look beefier but the Ultima claim a stronger ligsht weight material. Any difference in the balancing? Could I run S&S stroker big bore pistons? Would rebalance be required or only reccomended?

You should look into the price of a whole new S&S motor. For what flywheels, pistons, con rods, pinion shafts, new cylinders or boring your old one, boring your cases, gaskets and labor is going to cost you, for not much more, you could have a 113.

And when you bore that evo to get to 96inches, the material between the cylinders on the cases gets mighty thin. I know its done alot, but I dont like it.

You get what you pay for with Ulitima. Some have OK luck with them, but I went that route once, will never do it again.

If its just a bar hopper and you want more power on the cheap, change the gearing.

Thanks for the inout. From what I've read the late cases are OK to bore, its the early cases that had the issues. From a labor standpoint I'll be doing most of the work. That's why I asked about the balancing. That I would send out. Would really like some opinion of the Ultima vs S&S crank assemblies. I've heard the "get what you pay for" line before but from what I've seen Ultima makes some pretty sweet motors. Any experience out there on this?

I am running a S&S crank spin balanced by R&R in my 106" If it is a solid mount motor in a softail it is definately worth the spin balancing to keep the vibration down. I personally would not purchase an Ultima. I have heard too many bad experiences with their stuff.

I have used plenty of the Ultima and S&S lower ends. have had good results with both. If you decide to use the S&S crank they will balance it to the new pistons you are using for "FREE". Just give them the weights of the parts (pistons, rings, pins and clips) when you order the flywheels and they will send you the lowerend balanced. The 96" Evo motor is a real nice motor. Plenty of useable power in all gears at any rpm. With a good set of heads and a nice cam getting over 100 torque and hp is pretty routine. i can help if needed. dsv

Agree with John, but S&S does have a very good product as well.
