Noise identification help needed

1995 Dyna 1340 and just installed a SE-1 cam, new HD B-lifters and SE adjustable pushrods. Everything else is stock.

Have a ticking that's driving me nuts.

Lifters are adjusted properly, and with the use of a stethescope, no noise is coming from the rocker boxes, lifter blocks OR the pushrod tubes.

Took everything apart twice and inspected for rubbing or otherwise.

Replaced the INA bearing with B-138, and shimmed cam to spec.

Factory cam/pinion was white. Replaced with white.

Some ticking (and only place I can find ANY noise) seems to be coming from the cam cone, behind the [points] cover.

Am I hearing a too loose cam gear lash?

It's a faint ticking. Doesn't increase or decrease with throttle rpms and is nonexistant at start up, until about 1/2 mile into the ride.

Stays quiet till warmed up, then stays constant, although faint at times with increased exhaust noise and wind noise?

Ideas?

Dave, its very hard to diagnose a noise over the internet, but one thing i will tell you, is that with a larger cam with more duration, there is inevitable valve train noise that is going to happen, I have been chasing mine around for a long time, and have just came to terms that is going to happen, i know this isnt the answer you wanna hear, but its just not gonna be as quiet as a stock cam, other people might tell you different, but heres what ive tried, Pinion changes, valvesprings, two sets of lifters, pushrods, lifter tubes and still have noise.

Yeah....I know.... Was just hoping for the white dove to land on the railing of the ship after 40 days/nights of rain.

Even with only .495 of lift, I figured the "Over .500 of lift" noise rule might apply to me and cancel me out.

Damnit.....

How many miles are on the outer cam bushing in the cam cover?

When they are worn they will cause excess gear lash.

Is it possible to install your original cam gear onto the new cam?

33K

I *could* install the stock gear on the SE cam. The SE cam looks like it's sitting on a key. However, the stock gear doesn't. Are they still interchangable as long as I index them the same?

Try adjusting the push rods a little longer. If you installed them to spec, you have about .100 down in the lifter. I had to adjust mine about .150 down in the lifter to get it quiet, which is fine since there is .200 total travel in the lifter. Just make sure you can still spin the push rods after they have bled down to make sure they are not too tight.

Did that.........forgot to mention it. SE calls for 2.5 turns and I'm out to 3.75, which is roughly .130 over zero lash. Maybe a 1/4 turn more....

Dave, one thing you may have missed (as i did) the pinion gear on my Evo has 2 or 3 bad teeth, did not find untill several tear downs, almost beat me but i got her....I had the same noise you described....did you take it off, clean it, and look at it under a mag. glass?
