Need thoughts on Andrews EV27 cam

I have a stock 97 heritage softail with no motor work done on it. I would like to upgrade the cam to give a more low to mid range torgue/horsepower. I have heard very good things about the EV27. By installing an EV27, will it hurt/wear/damage my stock motor, trans, etc.? What type of results or gains might I expect with this new cam? Thanks to all for you help!

best move i ever made...wanted a little more performance and good rideability....

cam has great pull and dirveability right from cold start till i shut er down is exceptional...

its a mild cam so youre not stressing the crap out of anything...its reasonable and a good drop in...

i'm not sorry...

springer- will become famous soon enough
It's a nice cam for a little more. Good for torque and nice manners. Easy recommendation in a mild upgrade.

I have the same bike - '97 FLSTC and put that same cam in mine. All I can say is...........

I love it!!!!

It's not noticable right off the line but when you hit second gear, you better hang on!!!
And no worries about hurting anything else. I think you will be very pleased if you put one in your bike.

I've heard better things about the EV27, over the SEH-1 cam I just installed. Kinda wished I went with the EV27, but a swap would be even simpler now....

Make sure to replace your INA inner cam bearing while in there, and this is a good time for new lifters, if your's are originals.

I was looking into the 27 cam and the woods W6. I went with the woods W6 after talking many people & to Bob Woods about what I was looking for out of my bike...I recommend you make the call to him and he will help you with what you need even if you don't go with his cam. I installed the W6 cam with new haley lifters, SE quick install adjustable push rods, new torrinton cam bearing & .055 cam sim. Changing out the cam bearing is a VERY easy task with the right tool. This went into a 98 EFI road king with 15,000 miles on the motor, I had already installed a SE efi air filter kit, power commander USB 3 and supertapp 2-1 exhaust. Before the cam swap it was dyno'd at 63.3 HP and 79 ftlb torque. The cam put the power where I ride, pulls strong for 2000 up and increased my fuel mileage by 2-3 MPG depending on how I am riding. Before the cam swap I got 41-43 MPG, I now get 43-46 mpg with the cam change being the only difference. I have over 6000 miles on the bike since the cam swap and can tell you it was worth the time, effort and money. The bike runs smoother and less vibration on the highway. 2800 RPM is 70 MPH, 3000 RPM is 75 MPH and 32 is 80 MPH. Over 85 I start to feel the evo engine vibration that I used to feel at 70. I have not been back to the dyno tuner yet as the bike runs fine and I have new set of SE heads to install later this year. Then it's back to the dyno for a final tune and report on what I am making for power. Hope this helps you with your decision making process.

The popular cams that Andrews puts out are no more radical than a triumph bonneville cam in the late 60s, probabley less so. These are ground so the engine works the way it was designed to work, not the way the EPA wants it to. if the cam doesn't need anything special, like different rockers and it is able to use with stock pistons, go for it. it isn't going to mess the engine up, it will most probabley have the engine running more efficiently and extend engine life.

Thanks, fowler12, for making this inquiry...

I have recently been interested in this same cam for my 97 RoadKing. My main interest was whether or not I needed to change out the INA bearing as I'm just about to hit 45,000 miles and have had no trouble at all from my engine...but IF I needed to be in there anyway...would changing cams be a good idea and if so, which one would be best...

Everyone that I've sent a PM to has a favorable opinion of the EV27 as well...

I was going to use a SE cam if possible, but it looks like the EV27 is better throughout the RPM range...

Anyway, I appreciate the replies to his inquiry...

Just another opinion here, I have a '99 Softail standard that I ride 2 up with and was looking for a little more push for the motor. I also went with the ev27 and also had the new inner cam bearings put in, Rev-tech lifters, S&S adjustable push rods, and also changed out the plastic HD breather gear and went with the metal S&S breather gear after being shown several of the plastic ones that were missing the vanes from them. My guy redid the carb and these changes made a world of difference on the way my bike now perform. It already had the K&N filter system and I also put the V&H big radius 2 into 2 and all together it is GREAT. The motor is actually a noticeable amount quieter than before. You could also tell the bearings in the lifter rollers were going after they were removed, 3 of them were very hard to roll and felt rough when they did roll. I'm sure there are as good and better cams out there but I am very happy with the Andrews.

pawpawsoftail, yep.....thanks for the reminder on the breather gear. How many miles did you have on your engine when you put the cam in and how many since...

Hey Wildpig, I had close to 50,000 miles at the time and I'm around 54,000 now. No issues and the thing is still quieter than lots of stock Evos. And I still get a big smile when I gas it.
I also went with the Crane hi-4 single fire ignition system, made it start better and all together the thing gets a little better gas mileage.

Thanks all for the great thoughts. I like the idea of replacing the inner bearings, pushrods and lifters while putting in the new cam (My bike has 32,000 on it). I am fairly mechanically inclined and was wondering how big of a project this would be to take on myself. What special tools may I need. Or, is it worth just paying a professional to do this job? Thanks again for the insight!

Forgot to ask, what is the benefit of "adjustable pushrods" like those made by S&S?

The Andrews 27 cam, along with a Wood 6, are 2 of the BEST cams ever designed for the Evo's. (6 cam is also available for T/C's)
What a guy feels when installed, can be felt all over again with an increase in compression. 9.7-10.2 range. Large fun.
