60 wt in a TC95

Guys, since I built my '02 FXDX with a ZIppers 95 Muscle kit a few years ago, it's always run strong and been trouble-free. However, it does have an annoying valve noise between about 3k and 4k rpm. The Baisely spring was installed and helped a little.

I decided to experiment with a heavier oil, and just put in straight 60 wt dino. I had been using Mobil1 20-50. I would have gone with a mult-vis 60, but I couldn't find any locally.

It's too soon to know for sure, since I just ran it in the garage, but the bike seems much quieter. It sounds better than it ever has, throughout the rpm range. No problems starting either, in 50 degree weather. I do have compression releases.

Should I have any concerns? Thanks a lot,

John

You're possibly masking a problem by using 60 wt. My guess is that you have incorrect valve train set up as you are probably running the 577 cam which shouldn't be noisy. If you have the 647 or 657 then that is what is to be expected. And, not for nothing, that Mobil 20-50 SYN REALLY seems to thin out. A couple of guys came in here using it after a strong ride on hot days and it was very noisy. Changed to 20 50 Amsoil and big difference! She may start OK but straight 60, especially in your neck of the woods is not a good idea.

godzilla22 is an unknown quantity at this point
It's not a good idea.

If I was in an area where the temperature ran above 100 degrees consistantly I would possibly consider running straight 50 wt. in a twin cam or an EVO. Under no circumstances would I run 60 wt. in it.

Thanks Grock, yes I'm running a Redshift 577 cam. I should probably re-check my pushrod adjustment before I do anything else.

I appreciate the advice.

60wt

I think it's funny that the guys here steer you away from somethings and for good reason, I left my ride at the stealership for some warranty work while on vacation and had them do an oil change and they put in 50 wt. 1 of my complaints was excessive oil use , funny they didn't say anything about valve seals took it to another dealer and they replaced the seals and a windshield the other wouldn't the oil useage seems to have stopped so far.

05 fltri by the way

That's too heavy in a hot climate, in your situatio oil never gets hot enough to really do its job. Everyone is concerned about heat..........oil needs to be atleast 185 to flow and lubricate properly, even 220 is no too hot.
