why can't you go back to dino oil?
So, I've converted to syn oil on my WG. I was just wondering why they say you can't go back to dino oils... I'm not planning on it, but just wondered. What happens when you do a valve job, and you have to re-seat the valves? Don't know if I ever will, but what if I do a 1550 conversion?

There is no problem going back to Dino oil if you choose. Valves don't need to be "re-seated" after a valve job. There is no break in for a valve job. If you replace the pistons and bore or hone your cylinders, then you need to break in the engine and re-seat the rings. That would be considered a top end rebuild.

Just one of these things the dealer told me when I picked up my used '02 WG... Guess he was looking to make some long term $$$ off of me... Too bad I don't buy H-D oils...

Good info. What's considered a bottom end rebuild?

There isn't as much bottom end rebuild in the Twin Cams vs. all previous HD engines. EVO's and earlier bottom end rebuild include rebuilding the connecting rods, truing the flywheels, replacing the crank bearings as well as oil pump and cam bearing servicing. The Twin Cams don't have rebuild able flywheels and therefor have less bottom end work to be done. There are companies that offer flywheel rebuilding but HD says to replace them now.

"They" used to say that way back when Synthetic was new, and Harley forbade it...

Thanks for all the inputs. The "no going back" was the only think lingering in the back of my mind as to if I did the right thing. Guess I don't have to worry about that anymore...

This is just one more of the many myths about synthetic oil. If it was true I would be a multi millionaire by now as I have been selling synthetic oil for 25 years and have seen people go back and forth. Really don't know what started that myth. May be someone thought that it couldn't be mixed.
