Just When My Oil Change Was Going So Well

I was humming along, let the oil drain, pulled the filter off put the new one on clean the bike off real well...

Went to fill er up and put in the 3 qts & maybe a quarter of the 4th and I'm 1/4 inch over the fill line.

Ran it pulled some oil out via on old baster and I am still over the fill level.

Any suggestions or should I just keep sucking it out till I get where I need to be?

And yes, I was checking it upright.

Drain some out into a clean container from the drain plug. If you drain too much out, put a little more back in.

The burning question all inquiring minds want to know is . . . was it synthetic or dyno? Kidding aside, I find it odd that oil levels seem to be a recurring issue. The H-D techs I've seen service bikes add oil to the level they think it ought to be, then test ride the bike and check it again. What they tell me is, when checking oil at full operating temperature, the oil level should be midway between the high and low marks on the dipstick. Seems like it should be more exact than that. But go figure.

Honestly MadCity, it's no different with cars. I worked two years in a dealership and what it comes down to is this. The amount of oil in the oil tank is just to make sure that the pickup on the pump doesn't ever starve for oil. Generally, even the low oil mark is well above the minimum level for the oil pickup. So as long as you make sure the level is above that mark you're fine to make sure the pump isn't starved. As long as the pump is pulling oil, your pressure stays up and you're fine. It's a very inexact science and that's just the way it is.

I just put what the capacity chart in the owner's manual in the bike and ride on. IMO, there's no need to fret over such a small thing.

BTW, Jack

Your gonna get a high reading if you haven't started the bike up and got it hot. The new oil has to soak into the filter media.

My service tech told me to make sure the engine was hot not warm but hot ride it around for a good 10 to 15 min. then change oil. If engine is not hot oil will stay up in the top end and you will not drain it all out. Just my two cents.

later

Make sure the bike is road tested enough to get it up to temp.
If the oil level is still high, you can use the baster to remove more if that makes you comfortable.
But if its just a 1/4" over full on the dipstick, I don't think there is a need to worry.

I wouldn't recommend running it over the full mark. It won't hurt it but might start blowing out the A/C or launching the filler cap.
