The transmission will last just about forever no matter what gear lube you use.
I use 90w, whatever brand is on the auto parts store shelf...

I started using Redline to figure out where a leak was coming from and have used it since.

I used straight weight 50 in my old shovelhead and it ran 167,000 miles. The motor gave up but the trans was going strong.
What do you use in your car? That trans is way more $$$.

Redline shockproof heavy. Have tried Mobil-1 75/90, 75/140, Belray 85/140, and Amsoil severe gear 75/140. Redline is the quietist and smoothest I've tried.

Redline is nearly twice as thick in viscosity as most other gearlubes used in Harleys and that fact alone may make things a little quieter, but it will not out live any other gearlube on the market in a Harley. No matter what fluid one uses the tranny will still hold together well and will usually out live the rest of the components on the bike. A harley tranny will live a long life using a motor oil or a gearlube no matter what the level of noise the rider is hearing unless there is a manufactures defect in the tranny or some one fails to use the clutch correctly when shifting. The tranny was designed for fluids using anti-wear additives like in a motor oil and does not require gearlubes using extreme pressure additives, but most like the piece of mind that a gearlube provides.

It's funny how everyone always notices a difference when they switch to XYZ oil. Truth be told all they did was drain some old worn out oil and replaced it with new oil. Pick a gear oil to your liking and change it every 20k and the trans will more than likely outlive the rest of the bike.
When I hit 5k on my bike and went to change the engine oil I noticed a bottle of RedLine trans oil at my indy shop. I though what the heck, lets see what all the hoopla is about. I drained the HD Syn3 that was in my tranny for the past 4k miles and put in the RedLine. I honestly couldn't tell any difference. It didn't eliminate the clunk when shifting. It didn't make it shift smoother. It didn't give me better fuel economy. All it did was make my wallet $13 lighter.
