S&S Oil Filter, comments?
Hi everyone.
I tried a search on this but didn´t find anything, so sorry if this has been asked before.
I have a 2009 FLHR. 3000 miles.
Has anyone here any experience with, or comments on the S&S oil filters?
S&S say the filter medium is finer, and that the bypass valve is different, in that the bypassed oil doesn´t flow over the dirty side of the filter... ??
I´m asking because I got an S&S filter complete with 4 quarts of Mobil 1 20W-50 V-Twin oil. On the filter box, it says Twin-Cams up to 2006!!
The people I purchased from here in Germany, say it´s a printing mistake from S&S.
I did the oil & filter change today, and while I live with the familiar little valve-train noises that most TC owners have, they somehow sounded a little louder today, than yesterday, before the oil & filter change.
Maybe I´m just imagining this, or could the S&S filter be restricting the oil-flow to the valve-train?
I always ride with the original windscreen, so any mechanical noises from the "engine room" get amplified anyway.
Or should I just resort back to the original Harley oil-filter?
Appreciate any help.
Cheers!
mike

What oil did you have in the bike? HD? or other? If you switched to mobil 1 syn, the valvetrain may become louder just due to the oil being "thinner".

I guess it was the standard HD360 20W-50 Dino up until 1000 mile service, after that Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 syn.
I just wanted to give her some fresh oil now, at 3000 miles, after touring through Switzerland, down through the French alps right down to Monaco/Monte Carlo, and back again! It was pretty warm down there 4 weeks ago! (26C./90F).
Next change at 5000 miles, after that, normal intervals.
Yes, you´re right, the valve train did get a little louder after the first change to syn at 1000 miles, but I was getting a little worried about whether the S&S filter i fitted yesterday, was as good as a standard moco oil filter; probably more of a placebo thing on my part... warranty issues etc...
Went out for a ride today with some new high-tech earplugs, designed for motorcyclists/cabriolet drivers; wow, easiest way to get rid of engine noises!!
Anyway, S&S stuff is ok, yes?
cheers!

Mike, you will be fine, S+S is always great stuff.. The filters are all the same from 99-present, so yes it is just a misprint or a non updated label. Just enjoy the ride, sounds nice where you are....

Thanks mate!
Well it´s a bit cold here now, (Northern Germany) was 9C/49F today, but the weekend looks promising
I often put my bike on the train, and travel to Southern Europe/Switzerland ´cause the trip through Germany is pretty boring, and flattens the middle of yer tyre!
Thanks for putting my mind to rest!
cheers!
