Primary oil type?

I use HD Syn3 in my primary. Occasionally I have problems down shifting if I come to a stop in a higher gear. A mechanic said the clutch I probably sticking slightly. Any ideas of a better oil to use.

Dextron/Mercon Mobil synthetic tranny fluid in mine. Buddys RK had the same thing going on that you have we switched it to the ATF and he hasnt complained about it since. Although it only has been a few hundred miles since the swap!

I seriously doubt your problem is with the oil. More often then not this kind of issue is the clutch adjustment or primary chain adjustment. My bet is on the clutch adjustment.

btw, could you describe the problem your having down shifting? If you mean your in 3rd when you come to a stop and you try to down shift to 1st and it shifts into 2nd but doesn't go to 1st until you move the bike forward slightly (with a little click), that is normal and is not an issue in the primary. Its normal behavior of the tranny itself. Just downshift as your slowing to a stop and you should be fine.

Before you change primary fluid check the adjustment in the clutch and primary chain. If those are correct should shift fine. I did notice a difference in finding nuetral with ATF and shifting is a little better than before.

Are you using the tranny oil in the primary?

Yes, guess I'm getting alzimers. Some times I forget to down shift coming to a stop. Like wanting to tell another rider his saddle bag latch is undone, etc. That is about the only time it happens.
I use Red Line High impact (?name) in the tranny and the tranny is still noisy.

I just changed out Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF for Amsoil Supershift Synthetic ATF. No noticable difference.
Used to use synthetic 20/50 in the primary and I can tell you for certain, the ATF is far superior.

How often do you change it? Same as the engine oil, 3000 ml.?

Check your adjustments FIRST, and go from there. As far as primary oil I like SUPERSHIFT ATF from Amsoil.
