Draining Engine case sump

I am going to change the oil on my bike to a different brand and viscocity. I thought it may be a good idea to drain the case sump at the same time, to reduce the dilution of the new oil. Is this a problem? Will the pump cavitate on start up?

Don't Do It!

Do not try to drain the sump, what little oil is there won't cause near the trouble you can cause by messing with that plug!

That plug is installed with red loctite if you must remove it ,it has to be heated up. On a warm engine there will be little if any oil in the sump, warm it up change oil ride....tom..

Unless the engine has a sumping problem, there's only gonna be a few ounces of oil in there. Your mixing that with around 100 oz of new oil. If your worried about the old and new oil not getting along, just shorten the first change interval to say maybe 1,000 miles. No worries.

More so when reinstalling the plug. It is a tapered plug and it will crack your case when overtightening it. 14 ft lbs max, if I recall correctly.
Better off not messing with it.

Get your motor to full operating temp. Get your tools ready then again let it idle for a minute or so. You should have minimal oil left in the case to worry about.

I did pull the plug after I took a short ride. I let it drain at the same time as the oil pan. I did not measure what came out. That would be real anal, but I did feel better doing it. At $9.00 a quart I wanted to delute it as little as possible. I probably won't do it again though.

Like I said earlier: don't overtighten that plug or you'll be replacing ALL the oil again (along with the rebuild needed when replacing your cases). At least you won't have to worry about the dilution anymore.
