ATF in primary

I have just serviced my primary and used M1 ATF synth type V due to the positive info on this website concerning ATF in primary. Question is...does using ATF cause any long term negative effects? Is it compatible with the seals, gaskets, etc? Has anyone had any trouble due to using ATF?
I am really pleased with the way my softail shifts, but I don't want to cause any damage down the road (no pun intended). I am hoping you will all chime in and re-assure me that it is all good....

Sorry, missed your post initially....
Been running ATF in mine for a while...What side effects are you worried about..
Charging system, clutch wont have any long term effects. the only problem i have ran into atf is it makes my rivera proclutch a tiny bit louder and if you primary leaks already, the atf is thinner and will leak...But if you have no leaks, you will be good to go.

Been running ATF Type F in my 107 primary for some time now. Better clutch separation when cold and easier to find neutral due to reduced drag of the friction plates. And as TX said, if your primary seals are on their way out, they will go quickly with ATF.

If a guy was going to run ATF in the primary what type of fluid should you run? A guy I know runs B&M Trickshift in his primary and really likes it. I have a couple of bottles of Amsoil Universal ATF that I bought for my car and never used, is this the right stuff?

The Amsoil ATF will work fine in your primary.

YankeeBob is reading this now saying WTF is this?
I have had M1 synthetic ATF in my primary for about 2000 miles now. No problems. I like it. Clunking is gone, shifts smoother, neutral is easier to find, etc....

I just took out Redlibe ATF from the primary. I will never put that in again. The bike had a bad knock when it was cold. I switched to another oil and the knock went away.

Right now I'm running an off the shelf Dextron (I think it was Castrol brand) per RiveraPrimo instructions. Seems fine. What would I notice by switching to, let's say the Amsoil synthetic ATF?

You probably wouldn't notice anything different unless you were riding in very cold temperatures. Synthetics generally shine in low and hot temperatures over conventional oils.

Atf

I'll chime in with this.
Bandit Machine Works, (John Magee, owner) reccomends atf with their clutches.(link from our site) Have known of folks using it back in the late 80's.
We have never witnessed any problems with it.

Why use ATF in the first place? HD spends big bucks for engineers to do R&D and we want to change from what they recommend to ATF. Why?

You mean the same R&D guys that provided us with twisted cranks, failed crank bearings, the clatter cruise drive gear box and some other goodies?
