Mobil 1 V Twin
I hate to do this cause I've read a million of these threads, but i noticed something when i switched to Mobil 1 V Twin after using Syn 3 since i got my bike.
The bike is quieter . I used to have a lot of top end noise, especially after i changed cams and went with the gear drive.
But to me it's a lot quieter than it used to be. Even the gear drive doesnt whine as much. From now on it's Mobil 1 in the crankcase and Shockproof Heavy in the trans and MTL in the primary.
Can Mobil 1 be used in the primary?

Mobil 1
Yes, mobil 1 was formulated for use in the primary as well as the crankcase.

Yes. I use it in mine.
M1 VTwin in engine and primary, Redline Heavy Shockproof in tranny.

I have become a firm believer in high quality, name brand oils. I've learned in my job that not all oils are created equal. This is primarily the case in "extreme use" (high heat, high RPM, tight tolerances, etc...) applications. We can make minor changes in oil formulations and see significant improvements or degredation in internal parts wear. You would be AMAZED!!
I know that there is a big difference in automobile racing engines (always extreme use!) and Motorcycle engines. But our Harleys experience temperature extremes and the occassional (more for some than others ) RPM spikes. I want to know that the oil I am using will handle those extremes.
I use Mobil 1 V-Twin in Crankcase, Redline MTL in primary, and Amsoil 75W90 in Transmission. And I change all 3 every 3K to 5K miles. I see it as cheap insurance. Plus I like tinkering w/ my bike!!

Like i said i was really impressed with the way it quieted my engine down.
Is there any advantage to running automatic transmission oil in the primary?
I was going to put B&M trickshift in but i couldn't find it in my area.

Been running Mobil1 for ever. Run it in my old and new bikes. Great oil and yes, it quiet downs the top end and tends to run cooler. About 6 bucks a qt at Wal-Mart. Before the V-twin formula I ran the "old" 20-50 red cap, worked the same but has since been discontinued and replaced with 15-40.

Mobil 1 V-Twin
I used to run Mobil 1 20W-50 in both of my bikes in the crankcase (1200 sportster and BMW R1100RT). Then, the local Wal-Mart and auto parts stores down here in South Florida stop stocking it. They did have the Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 for $10 a quart or some ridiculous price. I think Mobil found out that bikers were running it in their bikes and just tweaked the formula a little bit and decided to increase their profit margins. Since they discontinued marketing it down here, I had to go to Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic extended mileage oil which is good for 15k miles or 1 year, whatever comes first. I usually run it for around 9 months. I have been fighting cancer for 2 years so mileage is not so much a concern. Some BMW guys have sent the extended mileage Mobil 1 15W-50 in for oil analysis after a year in the bike, and it was still in spec. Good stuff. Of course, that Amsoil is damn good oil too. Michael

Most of you seem familiar with Redline (using it in the trans), why did you choose Mobil 1 over Redline's 20-50?

I looked again, only 15w-40, no more 20w-50 that I can find. The local Wal-mart even stopped carrying the V-twin 20-50.

I have two local Walmarts, only one had M1 V-Twin. The other one just recently stocked the new M1 15W-50 at ~$23 per jug.
