Thumbs up Torco engine and tranny fluid is installed

Went with 60w (I'll swap to 50w for winter) Torco (that's a non-synthetic) in the engine and 75w/140 in the gearbox per GMR's recommendation. I was running conventional HD 20w-50 in the engine before (this was during break-in of the new build) and Syn3 in the tranny (I didn't like the way it shifted with Syn3, BTW.) I also put some Trick Shift in the primary which is basically an F-type automatic transmission fluid.

Why the straight weight Torco? Firstly, because it has MPZ which is some really cool magic stuff that does good, wonderful, and fantastic things to your engine! The other reason is that in R&R's testing it controlled aeration and foaming in very impressive fashion. Because of this, R&R, Hillside, and GMR all swear by the stuff and that's plenty good enough for me.

I only put about 60 straight miles on it yesterday but I can tell one good thing already....It runs COOLER! Now I need to put more miles on it in different types of riding to draw firm conclusions but I can tell you that it's definitely running *AT LEAST* 10 degrees cooler than before, almost certainly 15 degrees cooler, and most likely more like 20 degrees cooler. Before it would run about 245-250 in the heat like yesterday (94 degrees and humid out) but yesterday it ran 225-230. Very nice! No need for an oil cooler with this stuff.

Keep in mind that this is a 137 HP 124" at 10.8:1 CR with no oil cooler that lives in the deep southeast. You wouldn't expect it to run any cooler than it does. In fact, I was quite ok with it running up to 260 degrees before but hey, cooler is better.

The Trick Shift really didn't seem to change anything with the clutch operation. I didn't do any WOT gear changes but parking lot maneuvering and normal starts seemed much the same as before, which is fine. I'd expected the clutch to feel more abrupt on engagement than before but it didn't, so that was nice.

Where did I get Torco? I just made a phone call to GMR Performance and Steve took care of the rest. Only took about 4-5 days to receive it. GMR is in Arizona and I'm in Alabama so that's pretty quick, IMO.

I'll try to update this thread as the miles pile on.

Maybe one of the big dogs can chime in for you but I would think that if it's good enough for a 124" that it would be more than adequate for a 98".

It's "Harley and V-twin" oil. It's called V-series "ST". Take a look...

There were two dealers fairly local to me too but they didn't carry the V-series (carried mainly the stuff for dirt bikes, watercraft, and other water cooled engines) oil nor would they order it (said the shipping would be more than the product...which is complete BS as I've already proven.) So, I ordered it from GMR. When you buy it a case at a time (enough for 4 changes) the shipping isn't bad at all.

Well my local place is the same type, a dirt bike, ATV shop but he said he would order it, in fact he was getting ready to place an order today. He said it should be here tomorrow, so we will see. I ordered only 6 qts.

I am getting ready to make the switch to Torco for a trial as well. Just like many on this forum, trying to calm down the noisy gremlins in my TC. I notice they also offer a 20W50 as well. I am by no means an oil expert but when the motor reaches normal operating temps, is there any difference in a 20W50 and straght 50W?

I was having heating problems on my 02 Soft Tail so I started doing some research. I finnaly found a GREAT Indy in Hillside and Scott set me on my way. I added Turco 50W in the engine, red line in the trans and primary and installed a Jagg oil cooler. I have to say I am very pleased with all the changes Scott at Hillside suggested. The Turco has made a huge difference in the engine, runs much quieter, dropped about 30 degress in oil temp and trans shifts much smoother also finding nuetral with 1 click of the foot.
I ride in the Texas heat on a daily basis so heat was a big concern for me.
I was running HD syn3 and once I changed and experienced the difference I will never go back.
Turco for me all the way in engine and Redline in trans and primary.
A big THANKS to Scott at Hillside for being honest and helping me out. Cost a little more with shipping but well worth it !!!

Randy (HYPERFORMANCE) and Reggie (R&R CYCLES) both recommend it in all V-Twin Builds... No matter what the inches are...

Reading the Torco website, they state that the 50 & 60 wt oils are for pre-84 motors?

I'm leaning towards giving the 60wt a try and see how much difference there is in engine temp.

Currently using Mobil 1 synth and there always seems to be noise coming from my top end.
