Stator / Charging Problem on 99 Ultra TC88

Hi,

I took my bike out for a ride a couple of days ago and the battery was almost dead. Then noticed the voltage guage was down at 10v. I pulled the stator plug from under the right hand frame leg and found oil in it from my last oil filter change. I am not sure if this shorted out the stator or not. Another reason to be cautious off the oil flood when you remove the filter.

Anyway, I checked the stator and have continuity between ground and both stator leads, also major continuity between both stator leads, so it apears my stator is bad. Although I do get about 14.5 volts out of it at idle.

Can anyone tell me if I can just change the stator out, or should I also change out the rotor too at the same time. Also does anyone know if it will have messed up the voltage regulator too and/or a way of checking the regulator?

Thanks for your help.

Tony

There is probably no need to change the rotor, unless you see evidence of contact with the stator. Continuity between ground and stator does suggest that damage to the voltage regulator may have occurred. Best just to replace the voltage regulator for piece of mind, as it may have been the culprit that trashed your stator in the first place. However, to check voltage regulator operation once everything else is buttoned up and running, monitor across battery terminals with a volt meter and rev motor up and down. Meter reading should typically be within 13.2 volts and shouldn’t exceed 14.5 volts on a healthy battery.

Thanks for the info. I ended up changing the stator as it was fried, I guess a common problem on 99-01 EFI models, mine was a text book case of the 38 amp stator failing under draw of the 45 amp rotor. Rotor was fine so I put it back on, but was it tough to get off even with a correct puller. The aluminum casing was so tight I ended up using a Dremel to take a few thou off the top and bottom of the case so the rotor would come out. Looks like the aluminum built up a little from tightening the primary case screws just enough to make the opening too small to remove the rotor!!!

Now I need to make sure the breaker had been changed under the HD recall.

Thanks again.

Tony, there's also a service note to put the stator plug up on the frame, oil wasn't getting in from the last oil change it was leaking down from the primary case. Need to wire tie the plug up on the cross piece between the down tubes.

BTW, that won't cure the problem completely. As you said its a known issue on the efi bikes. Friend of mine has changed his 5 times. I'm working on my 2nd.
