Magnum44 wants to know Dino or Syn?
how to know if the starter clutch went bad?

Hi all,

My 2003 RK is having problems with the starter, it spins but it doesn't engage the clutch gear. I've pulled out the starter and dismantle it. It is the first time so I dont know what to look for. How do I know if the starter clutch went bad or if it is any other part?

Should the jackshaft only spin in one direction? I checked the starter clutch by hand and it spins both directions, is this normal? how do I know which part is wrong?

Thanks all!

The shaft will turn either direction turning it by hand. And when you pull out on the gear/shaft of the starter it should feel like it is spring loaded (because it is), and should spring in and out fairly easy, by hand. And if it doesn't, the spring may be broke, or the shaft may be gaulded up not letting it move freely.

But the Bendix will move only one direction. If the gear moves in both directions, I would replace the Bendix.

Finally solved it. The problem was the starter clutch. Moved to an All Balls clutch.
The funny thing is that the stealer wanted me to pay 600€ for a new stock starter plus installation (that makes approximately 850€) and I solved the problem myself for 57€ + primary oil.
Thanks for the replys.
