82 sportster generator issue?

Hey guys, so I was riding the bike a few weeks ago and the generator light wouldn't go off. The battery died while I was out, so bought a new one and tried to polarize the generator to it. That did not fix the generator light, so I bought a new generator. Now I have a new generator and battery, tried to polarize them and doesnt work. The volt meter reads 1.65 at 2000 rpm between A (on generator) and negative on battery. What can the issue be? The "new" generator I bought appeared to be refurbished but it should be working I figured... the bikes turns on and runs fine, its just that the generator light is constantly on.

Any ideas anyone? any help is appreciated.

I think the light works off of a switch on the reg, when it is charging the switch trips and the light goes out, or you may have a broken wire or bad ground.

Have you tested your regulator?
here is a test from FSM for generator
remove both "a" and "F" wires from gen use a volt meter on 10 v scale connect pos lead to "a" and neg to known good ground run at 2000 rpm reading should be a min of 2-2.5 volt
polarizing you say you have tried this but here is how you do it by the manual with gen on bike an regulator connected connect jumper to terminal"f" and momentarily touch it to batt pos post.
not trying to say you did it wrong just showing procedure from manual
I can post the regulator info if you need
