Northeast wants to know Dino or Syn?
Starter Relay

I have a 2006 FLHRSI custom that has been occasionally making a loud click sound when pushing in the start button, and nothing happens. I want to change out the starter relay. I found what looks like one under the seat in a rubber boot, and another in the fuse panel under the left side panel...

I also read something that HD made a modification on this model bike, something like DGD-1 & AD-1...

Anyway, the two I found were:
The one under the seat is 31504-91b.
The one in the fuse panel is 31579-04.

Thanks..

For anyone who is interested....on certain models of road king, the starter relay is located under the seat and is 31504-91b.
On the 06 Road King custom, FLHRSI, and several other models, the starter relay is located in the fuse panel, and is part 31579-04, a micro relay. There is also the other relay mentioned under the seat, but it is used for something else on these models....
There is sometimes no warning when these things go, and for $6, you cant start the bike. To jump it, you have to run a wire from the battery connection at the starter to the spade lug under the plastic connector on the starter.

Or install one of these on the end of the solenoid.

I have started up with no problems since replacing...so far...if it happens again, I will re-post.
As far as the starter solenoid switch, that is a great idea...is it something that I need to bring it to my mechanic, or something not that hard to install?

Could come in handy, but it won't fix the problem.

Sound stupid, but. I've replaced 3 starter relays in, to me, a short time. Why they crapped out, don't know.

Got tired of taking off the seat and carring a jumper wire to go from the batt pos to the green wire on the starter solinoid. ( Ever try push starting a Fatboy @ a gas station when you hear the "click" ? I have. ) I had a 84 Toyota Camry starter relay around the house when the last relay went out. Took the female plugs outta the plastic holder. Wired it up correctly. No probs since.

Any relay has the diagram on it for wireing. Son's watching me do it and asks. Your going to put a Toyota starter relay in a Harley? Just wondering if the Harley relay can't handle the amp load and burns out.

A care relay is probably beefier. You have two rating on contacts, how many amps it can carry and how many it can breakin. The breaking portion requires bigger contacts.

Knock on wood my starter system is ok. I have replaced starter.

The push button isn't bad insurance. If it came in black I would think about it. I don't want one more thing to clean.

While looking at them, I did find one in black, but this company is a little more expensive than the rest.

After almost 3 weeks with no problems after replacing the starter relay, went to start the bike...got the loud click....
I think this time I am going to take a look at the starter solenoid. Does anyone know if it is easy to rebuild one or just replace it?

Doesnt so much matter what the relay come out of as there are only a few kinds generally used in auto apps. more the number of pins and the ratings like zerk said

Also check all contacts and connections had problems with this before as well as solenoid going bad

Northeast,

Repair kits are available. Any competent auto starter/alternator shop can also rebuild it but of course, starter would have to be out of the bike.
