removing ignition switch '05 FLHT

I just bought an '05 EG Standard. The handlebars are too far back for me. I plan on getting a service manual, but I just got the bike yesterday. I can see the bolts to adjust the bars after taking out the two side screws in the bottom cover, but don't want to screw up the ig. swith, which appears to need to come off to get the cover out of the way. Is there a trick to getting it off, like pushing a keeper in a certain spot, then pulling or some such thing? Thanks. Bumper

Yes its not that hard but can be tricky putting the switch back in,this subject gets covered a lot really you only need to loosen two of the bolts to adj your bars if you feel removing ign switch is to much take off your outer fairing remove the brackets holding the radio slide it out to get to the two front bolts. If you want to take off the nacelle it requires ign switch removal, turn switch to acc pos (this is important) pull your maxi-fuse,use a mirror under the switch is a metal tab push this while turning ign key counter clockwise about 60 degrees the switch will then release and slide up,dont pull the key out or turn anything, remove the large nut and piece it holds down remember how it goes also a spring then two torx screws hold the cover down, you dont even need to pull it all the way off just enough to get to the handlebar screws.Replacement can be a bit tricky but not hard if you take your time, replace the pieces removed and tighten the nut down, dont think it has to be real tight, then while maintainig the correct direction for acc slide switch back into place press far enough for it to catch but not to far, wiggle it a bit and see if it apears correct,if not pull it out and try again,it is real important that the switch is in the correct distance you may even measure it first so you know what that is,if the switch is down to far and you turn it only one part of the system will turn and it will be out of alignment, this can be fixed by turning the part out of order with a large screwdriver,if your careful you wont need that info,..

Wait you have a standard no radio, forget the ign switch pull off the outer fairing thats easier, take off the windshield then locate four bolts two are down near the forks two up close to the top (inside) I like to take two old socks and put em over the passing lamps to keep from scratching fairing, once the four torx screws that hold fairing are off reach in pull plug from headlight loosen the two bolts that hold handlebar clamp and adj the bars where you want em,piece of cake....Tom..

Thanks Tom. Sounds like the front is the way to go. Once I get them forward a bit, I'll enjoy that bike a bunch more. My knees are hooked to kind of a long guy. Appreciate it! john

.......done deal. Man, there's a lot of stuff up there, but with the front fairing off, it's all easy to get at. I did have to take out the glove box where the radio would be, but then wammo, there were the front two bolts for the handlebars easily got at while sitting on the bike. Thanks again Tom.
