Stator Special Tool

I've got an '02 Ultra that I suspect needs a new stator. The service manual says you need a special tool to remove the rotor due to the 45 amp rotor's stronger magnets. Those who have changed their stators, is this tool really needed to remove and replace the rotor without damage?

Thanks in advance for any info.

2 long 5/16 coarse threaded bolts are all you need. Clamp a vise grip onto each one and pull evenly.

Can you use a harmonic puller? Those are fairly cheap. Then just use washer and whatever bolt size you need.

Thanks for the tips. I've got an old steering wheel puller I can probably modify. I wasn't sure if it is a problem breaking it loose or just keeping it straight while it comes off. Sounds like its keeping it straight. I imaging the magnets want to drag across the coil cores. Thanks again for the help.
