Battery Dying

Hi Folks...This is my first post and am in desperate need of some help...I bought a 95 FXSTC with only 4600ks on the clock from a collecter out here in Oz...I put in a new battery but within 15miles the battery is dead flat...No blinkers,no speedo,no horn,a flicker of a light and when it is turned off there is not enough power to start it...Where do I start to look????Is it maybe a short or is there something obvious that I can try...Any help appreciated...

Cheers...Sparra

sounds like the battery was not charged all the way, 15 miles is not going kill a fresh battery. Obviously you got it grounded good...right? make sure that little plug in the front is plugged in to the stator (below the front jug in the case)

Thanks for the quick response....The battery was fully charged which makes me think it is a short somewhere...The plug you are talking about pushed in about 5mm,do you think that would make a difference???Will that plug com right out if you pull it hard enough??

Cheers....SParra

I've got one apart now that has all of the rotor magnets stuck to the stator. Definitely wasn't charging on this one. I'm putting it back together as a "bike in a box" type project.

Sounds like a battery issue or connection. If the battery was drained of all of its power in fifteen miles, it would seem like whatever was drawing that much current would be either smoking or glowing.

Charge the battery and re install it. Fire the bike up and put a meter on the terminals. Check if it's charging. It will take seconds to do this. If it is charging, shut the bike down and re check the battery. you may find a draw. thus leaving you with a week battery. i battery should start charging right away. I would start with that and go from there. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply fella's...I had it at a shop today and they said the regulator is fried so I have a new one on the way...The stator checked out ok so what caused the reg to **** itself I don't know...hopefully this will fix the problem but if it goes again I will replace the stator....

Cheers...Sparra
