Question Charging Problem

When I last ran my bike 94 FLSTC I had it on the battery tender for about a week. Went to go out on a ride and the battery dead. I had just bought the battery a week prior & on the tender all the time. I put it on the battery charger & it starts right up. Then I stall out and need battery charger again. Go for a nice ride & she is starting for several days again. Rode this past Saturday & she starts fine. Get ready to go out again in the evening and battey dead again. I put on battery charger & she starts. I have recently replaced the relay near the battery too from info I got from my last posting here. That did work for a couple weeks & now back to sometimes just a clicking sound. I am wondering if it is the regulator or the alternator is the problem? How can I tell? I should not start & then remove battery should I to see if it is alternator? Sometimes when I start the lights get brighter when I rev it up & sometimes seem charged as they do not get brighter.
Any help would be appreciated. My hubby says no riding til fixed because he is too old to push me. Lucky he hasn't had to do that many times.

do you have volt meter. the easiest way would be to get the bike running. and hold a meter on the battery. set meter to vdc. red lead on pos terminal, black on neg terminal. it should read around 14 volts dc. the voltage should rise as the rpms rise as well.

beyond that, there are test you can do to test the output of the stator. and aslo check to see if the stator is shorted to ground. or has an open.

good luck.

When you say the battery was dead, what exactly do you mean? Is it always the same, or do you get a click but no start sometimes and other times no click, no headlights, no nothing? Is the headlight on at all? Are the dash lights on?

Do not remove the battery when the bike is running. There is a proper way to diagnose the electrical system, which I give here: http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/el...do-i-need.html
