Dead Battery needs charge

I left my key on for about two days before I realized it. This obviously drained my battery severly. I called the dealership and they said all i needed was the HD trickle/tender charger. So I bought it and hooked it up last night only to find out that the trickle charger only works if the battery is at a certain level and not drained completly. Called the dealer back and told them what was going on and they said that I need to take the battery out of the bike and take it to them becuase they have a special charger that MIGHT bring the battery back to life, but I will most likely have to buy a new battery. I have a 12volt marine/rv battery charger that I wish I could use to get a little bit of a charge on the battery and they I could use the trickle charge to get it to where it needs to be. Is that sage or should I just take the battery to the dealer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a 2008 1200 XLC (Sportser Custom)

Thanks
Brian

You can jump it off with a car but dont have the engine running it can cause some damage, then see if it will hold a charge, but it probably will need to be replaced doesn`t hurt to try though..

i've done the same on cars a few times. Just jump start it , then put your charger on it.

So I just use normal jumper cables, but dont actually crank the car? This should pass enough charge to crank the motorcycle?

What ever you do, "do not" jump your bike with a running car. You could fry your ECM.

Jump start with a jumper pack are dirrectly from another battery, and that should't be a problem.

claydbal is reading this now saying WTF is this?
bad info. the battery tender will bring a dead battery back to life but it takes a log time. if it doesnt, you killed the battery.

do you want to experience this on the road?

Yes it is a slow charge. If the battery won't take the charge it is already 'killed'.

Good question. I could only guess that some how you can get a spike from an outside charging system.

I know that several a year come in, just after jump starts, with a DOA ECM. It happens.

Did your battery juice up enough so the Battery tender kicks in?

mowpar wants to know where he is and how he got here
same type of problem

I am having similar probs, my bikes battery went dead. Jumped it with the car, car running, stupid me what do I know. Ran the bike down the road bike stalled and would not turn over again. Got car, jumped battery again, with car running (Duh!), rode the bike home, trickle charged it with my battery tender plus.

Now I have more then 12 volts coming out of battery, tested with volt meter, lights come on seems to be charged but just clicks, once it acted like it truned half way but nothing since.

Since now all it does is click. does this mean the ecm needs replace or battery still the problem? Please help

mowpar,
If you push the starter button and it just clicks, it ain't your ECM. Given your circumstances, I'd lean towards a dead battery. There are other possibilities, but always start there. After having a fully charged battery, and once you get it started, make sure your charging system is working, as that sounds like it is out to me.

Brian,
In your case, and I hope everything is OK by now, you should have put your bike's dead battery on the marine charger set at its lowest setting. Or, get a 1 amp battery charger somewhere and put that on it overnight. Anything over 1 amp on the charger and you need to pay real close attention to the whole thing. Like if you use a 4 amp charger, don't leave it on more than a couple hours, then put your trickle charger on after that. Using a charger as I described is much safer than trying to jump your system off of a car, plus, once you jump it off, you are now putting a big load on the electrical system as it tries to charge a totally dead battery and run all your lights/ignition/hand warmers/heated underwear.

charged battery

I have charged the battery with a trickle charger. The reading from the battery is putting out the more then 12 volts required.

I have rechecked battery some 4 hours later, still holding that same charge, still only clicking.

If it were a car and I had a battery putting out the required volts, enought to start car, and it clicked then it would be the selinoid.

What am I up against? Why won't the battery showing a full charge start the bike, and only click? I am not a mechanic but it seems I am missing something. Can you clarify for me, the mechanics of my situation.

I believe that I could jump the bike and get it started, like I had done before, but do not know if this would help or exaserbate the problem. Maybe by jumping the bike and running it, and then by truning off the bike and then see if it would restart, my better enable me to understand the problem, I do not know. What do you think of my thinking on this? If I just need a new battery, that would be great. I just do not want to buy a new battery and have the same problem. Seeing as how the new battery would not put out anymore volts, then the one I have is showing that it is putttin out. I do not meant to bother you to death, I am just trying to understand the process, so in that way I will have learned something, and thus enabling me to maybe help others.

Thank you for your expertise in this area. It is great to be able to learn and not cost an arm and a leg doing it.
