Thumbs down Help! Charging Problem on 02 FXD

I have had some charging problems on my 02 FXD. Out of the blue, the battery went dead so I went and bought a brand new HD battery.

After about a week of occasional riding, the new battery went dead. I charged it up and took a voltage reading at the battery while running and it was about 12.4 V. I suspected the regulator was the problem so I bought a Custom Chrome regulator and put it on. After the charge, I'm still only getting about 12.6 V when running.

I checked the AC voltage out of the alternator and it is right on 36VAC. The grounds are good and clean but I think I am not getting enough voltage out of the regulator.

I suppose the new regulator could be defective. I thought about buying a new HD regulator and trying it.

Can anyone help me diagnose the problem without buying another regulator?

How can I narrow it down to root cause with my DMM?

Thanks for the help!

KL

The manual gives outputs from the regulator i believe. I think it also gives some resistance readings as well.

Hey all,

Just wanted to say that it ended up being a bad stator. Rotor was OK, but the windings on the stator were all blackened out.
