speedo problem

I have a dead speedo. No light or odometer. The tach works fine. It was jumping around and i bought a new sensor but only worked for a day then started jumping again for about 2 months now. Until today. How do I remove it from the fairing if I need a new one? I removed the 2 screws on the bracket inside the fairing but it wont budge. would the sensor wires kill it if they were loose because I was moving them around today before the problem. Thanks for any info.

I take it you have a newer TC than mine. I have a gear driven speedo from 1999. Since you said the lights do not work either, then there might be a big connection problem. The HD shop manual would be a great help to you not only diagnosing but also removing the unit if it is indeed bad.

You might also try to see if it lets you get it to go to the onboard diagnostics mode. Your dealer should be able to tell you have to activate that and if it lets you and gives the code, then they should be able to tell you what it means.

One last thing according to my 1999 manual for FLT, the only electric speedo was on the FLHR and the book states for "Problem #2: Inoperative read high/read low/Needle sticking/Needle intermittant or erratic". The first box is to check if it backlit, if not then to check the orange/white wire for 9/12 volts if there is not any then repair the O/W wire. IF there is 9-12 volts, then check the continuity for the ground wire. If you have continuity, then the speedo is bad. If there is not continuity, then the ground wire is the problem.

Hope this helps a little (you should confirm all above through a shop manual for you your year/model)

Anthony

claydbal will become famous soon enough
have seen a couple do this, it was the main switch on both bikes. with the bike started, wigle the switch back and forth and see if you regain power to the speedo.
