ALDL connection issues

I just purchased a SERT for my RK Custom, I loaded the program on my laptop. I do not have a serial port on the LP but borrowed a USB/Serial port adaptor. I insured I was using the same com port on my LP as the program but I get the error mesege of no communication with the ALDL.
I read trouble shooting and understand that the harley software is pickiy so I bought the Belkin convter that has been mention elsewhere in this forum, still I cannoct get the vin from the ECM and get the same messege. Ok no I am thinking that it is eitehr my laptop or the cable adaptor. So I drag my desktop outside and attempt to use it but I still get the same messege.

Sert is new purchased from Zanotti's .
Any ideas ?

Some easy stuff you probably already have done.
Load software for belkin.
Bike turned on.
try different com ports.
Check connections tight.
try different usb plug ins.
If you still have your desktop out there it should have a serial port, try that route.

Probably will be something simple, usually is for me and takes a bunch of different tries to get it.

Don't forget the kill switch has to be on too, that detail has caught many!

Both main switch and kill switch are (were) on and have tried 2 different serial connectors. The only think I havent tried was changing the baud rate of the connection which I will try this weekend.
I will be calling the dealer to see if they will attempt to scan my ecm for codes. Not there will be any but it show if their equip can communicate through the aldl to my ECM.
Just as a not I am a GM certified tech and program ECM's, BCM's, Radio's IPC etc daily as well as spend wy too much time on the computer , So im not too much of a moron to figure it out (some may disagree).
Thanks for the replies I will cross my fingers

I had the same problem today. My new laptop only had USB ports. Got an adapter USB to 9pin serial. Still didn't work. My last resort was to load SERT on my old laptop with a serial port and it worked like a charm.

I have had the same issue. I don't remember the exact details, but it had to do with the sequence of hookup. Either starting the program before hooking up the cables or vice-versa. Either way, it cleared up when I changed procedure.

Make sure to check the com port up on the top left of the download menu, you might have to go into "device manager" and make sure that the com port is working.

Fuel Injection Tuners

I am currently own a 07 FLHRC looking to upgrade to a stage 1 Kit. The question I have is the Fuel Injection Tuners. From, V & H, Power Commander,Arlen Ness Big Shot and a few others. I would like to hear some feed back on the operational use of these units and also what comparible exhaust systems they work with. Or do they all work with all the latest exhaust systems? Very interrested in hearing what is out there. I am leaning towards the V & H Fuel Pak.

I went through this last week when I purchased a serial to USB adapter. Being green about computers, I didn't know that I needed to install a driver for the adapter; hooked up the cables and the SERT wouldn't work.

When I tried the "install hardware" I would get a prompt for driver and my Windows 2000 software didn't have one. I finally realized I should look in the package the cable came in and found a mini-disc. I loaded the mini disc and then ran the install hardware program. I also did a program manager search to identify which comport the adapter was in; turned out to be com port 4.

When I went to the sert software to download the map, I used the menu on the sert software to select com port 4; after that all was well.

So the keys for me were to load the driver for the adapter cable, identify the com port for the adapter, and select that port when I went to download the map. It simply didn't occur to me that the serial to usb cable was something that required a driver; obviously it did. HTH.
