Ohh one thing .... on your "against popular opinion" ... Sert or super sert will not let you enter higher values than 14,6 in AFR - so you are safe there ... BUT the big deal is VE .. If you lower VE without having the bike proper tuned you will in fact LOWER the REAL AFR .. Not the one in the table but in reality...So do NOT lower VE unless based on a proper meassurement.. If you do you can very well feed the engine with way too little fuel

Hello Killerbob....I hope you did not take offence............I thought you might have put the wrong word in your statement.

The rest of the post was aimed at all the newbie questions to try to get the guys not to get too worried about using the SERT.

Too many people shy away from the SERT because they feel it is above them when it really is not that hard to learn at all.

Just got to think in terms of how you used to tune your bike when it had a carby and apply similar logic until you get comfortable playing with the SERT.

As you have stated Killerbob...............moving into the individual cylinder tables, timing, and VE tables needs considerably more understanding in what you are doing until you see the trends forming in the way the bike is running and you will get used to this the more you ride the bike and "feel" the changes that are occurring when you make your SERT adjustments.........

I certainly am not that experienced with the SERT at this time either but will go through the trial and error stages until I get to understand all that the SERT can do...................

I always take notes of the changes made in anything I do and when I get back from a run I write down the differences felt..........soon a trend forms and I get the understanding of what changes are needed to get the best out of the tune.

I think swapping out the A/F Sensors for say a pair of wide band sensors and A/F Meters like those available from RB Racing and then temporarily mounting them on your handlebars will let you see exactly how the A/F is under idle, load, constant throttle at say 30mph, then 60mph then top speed.............

The throttle position and A/F readings should then let you have an indication of what A/F adjustment is needed to get the best out of the A/F Tables.

Having a tacho/speedo will let you see the rpms at the above readings as well.

Timing then becomes the next item on my agenda to look at.......gently increasing this until knock occurs then backing off until knock goes away.....................

3/4 Throttle pulls in 3rd/4th/5th will very quickly let you hear if you have advanced timing too much..............

Low rpm roll ons will cause pinging on even the better tuned motors so dont confuse this with you thinking you have advanced the timing too much........................change gears more often.

Many race only applications build the motor strong enough to go through (live through) the detonation zone so as to produce those phenominal hi out put numbers you read about...........but this means tearing the motor down more often, checking for fatigue, cracks, wear, etc.

The desk top dyno that I constantly play with gives me theoretical VE numbers, timing numbers etc. for any combination of parts that I put together.

I intend to create a map based on these numbers and try them out............................................... ........

I am still running the bike in and have not put these numbers into a map as yet but will do when I get back to Oz on my next R&R and report back and advise if these work or are too risky to do.

All the best, Ozzie

Caution with ST calibrations, map values are way off

Guys, be careful with the ST calibration files. I did a back to back comparison data run using the trusted SERT and the ST. What struck me are the evidently wrong map values that the ST data run produces. At idle under identical conditions the ST reads 10-15 kpa, the tried and tested SERT reads 35 - 40 kpa. IF the ST misreads the map data and processes them with the data look up tables, the whole timing map for that matter is off. A 20 kpa difference is huge and can cause way too advanced timing. I verified this observation on a second bike.
I replaced the ST calibration with a matching SERT 4.77 and the bike is lot less jerky and has a better of idle throttle response.
The dealers already have a software level 204 for their DigiTechs, but that has not been released through the update server to the paying public.
ST is a huge screw up IMHO and the MoCo should quickly move forward with an update.

Ozzie, just was checking the files you zipped. Is this from the CD, or from your hdd?
There is no setup files in it.

Correction

I think I made a mistake. In the setup you can check all metric or all US or and here comes the tricky part, specify whether you want a mix of metric and US units. It appears that it was set to metric with the exception of MAP . This caused the difference. I am sorry that I spread some wrong information over the forum.
