I think that K&N makes the best filter I had the HD screaming eagle filter on my vrod and it never cleaned up very good threw it away and got a K&N. I think that arlen ness has one of the more reasonable kits $125 or so for the backing plate, filter, and mounting hardware. Kuryakyn has a kit with more filter surface area, also more cash. I'm leaning towards the arlen ness setup. Good luck.
BTW the arlen ness and kuryakyn kits both use a K&N filter

Zippers makes a real nice unit something like 2.75 iches deep and will not fit the standard football cover but flows very well.

What do you mean by the best? Highest flowing or best design and backing plate style?
If high flowing look at Hillside Cylces or Wood's filter. If best quality, look at doherty machine..IMO of course...

I would say best would be the cheapest one that flows enough for engines up to 124" and is reusable. SE or Arlen Ness. I think the Ness is the better deal.

Yup, those arent bad at all, of the 2 i prefer hd backing plate but not their filter.. But it also depends it you want to route the breather to atmosphere or back in the intake.

good point on the breathers. I run a kit I got from GMR. Allows me to run the breathers to the ground, which I think is important.

Agreed...I have a forward facing chrome spike air filter assembly. (similar to this http://www.tejasthumpcycles.com/Part...r.Cleaners.htm) I routed both breather lines together and have a line running down the side of my bike pointed down toward the ground. It's amazing how much "oily crap" comes out of those things. I'm just glad it isn't going back into the intake!!
