Constant Hissing Noise Near Fuel Tank

I have a 2007 Fatboy and I've been hearing a hissing noise coming from what sounds like the fuel tank. I understand about the fuel pump pressurizing the system when the bike is first turned on. But this hiss is on all the time when I'm riding.

Plus, I seem to remember the initial fuel pump noise more of a hum where this sounds like pressurized fluid flowing. And it's loud enough to be heard over the engine.

The only time I don't hear it is when I'm off the throttle. If I twist the throttle or keep it constant, I hear the hiss.

Any idea what this could be or what I should check out first?

Thanks,
LeonD

Sounds like you have a hole in the fuel line inside the tank. It rubs against the inside of the tank, eventually wearing a hole. See this thread for more.

I agree with Skivvy. It's more than likely the fuel line inside the tank. The fuel pump puts out about 50 psi, so even a tiny hole will make a noise. Especially on a tank that is almost empty. You will begin to see/feel a difference in performance. The bike will begin to 'sneeze' thru the air cleaner, and you'll have trouble keeping it a cruising speed.

How do I know all this? Same thing happened to me in June on a 3 day trip. The hole in my fuel hose was so small I couldn't even find it. But I replaced it and the bike ran perfect afterwards.

Thanks for the info.

Is this a do it yourself kind of thing or a take it to the dealer?

If you have a little mechanical aptitude, a few common tools and some patience, do it yourself. If not... let someone else. It's not terribly difficult. No need to drain the tank, it's all done from the top. I would suggest getting the service manual, though; getting the canopy with the pump, filter, float, etc out of the tank is a little tricky until you figure it out the first time.

Yep you definetly have a hole in the fuel line and no big deal to fix it yourself. Takes about an hour.

20538 will become famous soon enough
I had a fuel line making the noise you mentioned on a 03 FLSTCI. the dealer i go to changed it for $80, which I thought was a fair price to solve my problem and be on my way.
