Stock Computer Question?????
Hello All,
I'm new to this site and have done some searching, but can't find what I'm looking for. I have an 08 FLTR that i purchased used several weeks ago, in bone stock form. However, it came with the sert interface thingy and the dealer said "oh, the guy must have had pipes on it or something". My question is this, how do I tell if the ecm is stock? Do I need to go to a dealer to find this out? Is there any way to reset it to stock? The dealer I would have to go to wants 3 bills to put this thing on their dyno. When I heard this, i bought a power commander. I thought I could save money down the road by doing this.
The only mods I've done, and plan for the forseeable future are the big sucker and VH pro pipe. When I ordered the PCIIIUSB, They preprogrammed the closest map for my mods. I installed it and it is unbelievably rich. Crack the throttle and the black smoke pours! This tells me that my ecm is already modified. It also stumbles after it idles for a minute or so. Not to the point of stalling, but definately a big blip.
I'm going to the garage now to upload the map that was installed and have a look at the plugs. Any help or direction will be greatly appreciated!!!!!
Thanks much,
Dave

You have many options. First I would hook up the SERT (SEST possibly) then do a "GET ECM INFO" and check the part number of the currently installed map. Chances are you just have a canned stage 1 map and the part number help determine that.
The power commander with a preinstalled map likely will be no better than the ECM with a canned MAP. To get either of them right, I would suggest a good tune on a dyno with a qualified dyno tuner.
If you set on sticking with the PCIII, tuning it with the currently installed map (in the ECM) should not be too much of an issue as long as it is just a stage 1 or something that closely matches you bikes configuration. Another option is to take the bike to the dealer and have them reinstall the stock ECM map. The dealers have that ability using the "digital technician" though some do not know it.
If it were me, and I am biased because we tune, I would stick with the SERT, SEST, or TTS device that came with your bike and get it tuned properly.

Thanks for the info. I think I will have the dealership set it back to stock. I just have the adapter and not the software or cables for the sert. I just don't like the idea of having to pay the dealer everytime I want to make a change. I do know a small shop that has a dyno. I would sooner give him my money than HD. I don't know how much he knows about PC, but I think he would work with me on learning the software and how to use it properly. Hopefully it would benefit both of us. You never know, maybe I could help him tune in the future!!!
thanks,
dave

Depending on the the device you have, the software is not expensive at all. about $20. The cables are a little more than that. As far as NEEDING a dealer to work with it, you can make all the adjustments yourself with a computer. It has data logging capabilities and you can change settings just like a PCIII only MANY more options. I wouldn't abandon the device so quickly.
Does the interface have a red button on it? This will help identify what device it is and what software you would need.
If no red button then it is likely a SERT ... check out this thread ... http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/ef...wers-here.html
If it has a red button then it is SEST ... check out this thread ... http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/ef...sest-what.html

another quicky is to load a zero map into the PC3. this will put you back to the tune that is in the ecm.
agree with springer, tho, take it to a qualified tuner and have tuned for your mods--you say thats all you will likely do to the bike.

Thanks for all the input. It appears that I may have jumped the gun in purchasing the PC3.
The interface I have does not have a red button and has a part #32107-01L dated 04/14/08. My next dilema in using the sert is the fact that I don't have a serial port on my laptop. Does the latest version of the cables have a usb to serial interface? If not, that would be a problem.
thanks,
dave

OK, so you have a SERT. The USB adapter to get is a Belkin F5U109.
You will also need a cable kit.

Most every HD is too lean from the factory in order to get by the EPA's standards for new vehicles. The standards for used are much looser. An air cooled motor needs to be richer than the EPA wants, and there can be a calibration buildup between the computer and the sensors.
Virtually ALL HDs with FI should be tuned and this is a great unit to do so. the stock setting will not be right, the tweak is much better for the bike.
