Pinging/detonation
What does pinging and or detonation look like on a dyno graph line?

...And for a discussion on Iridium plugs is there a difference between stock and Iridium for ping detection?

About all I can tell you from operating a dyno while watching data real time is that if you get ANY knock detection/retard while doing a roll on power run your power will be way down. Easily lose 8-10 if the retard kicks in, even though you can do the same roll on with the knock detection shut off in the tuning software and never hear as much as a light ping. I feel it's far from the perfect system for performance application, the S&S VFI system actually uses a knock sensor mounted to the rear head or a bracket from the upper motor mount. Even this system is not perfect.

Will there be a dip in either curve line? This would be with knock sensor off, I'm thinking as power curve was on the upswing, it would dip down and become erratic if motor started detonating ?

There's been a lot of talk about pinging and want to mention that it could be caused by bad intake seal. This has happened to me. My dyno turner checks for intake leaks before he puts a bike on the dyno and found there was no need for a retune and just replaced the intake seals.

I don't mean to say I have it because I don't believe I do but was curious after seeing my dyno graph both lines are smooth without any dips or peaks, was just curious.

The power graph lines will become very ragged....engine temps will rise..If you do a quick re-pull the power will degrade further and the temps continue to climb....you cant see this if you "smoothing the data"...I would much rather see raw-uncorrected data alongside the smoothed version......you learn more from the unsmoothed...Ron

this sheet shows an ign issue. You can see that the power fell off on both hp/tq. I was data logging this run and went back to see how much it pulled out. This bike was in stock form from HD. I see this on almost every 08+ bike in basic form/ stage I as well. Once tuned problem solved.

Isn't is just as simple to data-log and look at that information.

In an ideal world yes, but it appears that once you have exceeded the parameters programed into the ecm ( cylinder pressure ) knock detection using the Delphi Ion system gives false readings IMO.

IT can give you false readings that is a fact. being that the way the system was designed hd looked at readings from the ign system compared to what they heard in the engine and when those two items happened they decided that was ping. I asked Steve at TTS about this same thing. He explained to me how hd came up with this system.
