Wide Tire kit for Dyna

I am about due for a tire replacement on my Wide Glide and Iam thinking of going to the 180 wide tire kit from H-D. Has anyone out there used this kit and what do you get for the extra 80 bucks over the price of the tire when you buy the kit? What front tire did you run with GT502 seeing how they don't offer the 502 in a size that will fit the front wheel? Any help would be great. Thanks

You have to use what you got. Expect a matching tire later next year.

While you may have some trouble finding a dealer who will install the 180 tire without also installing the kit, the kit is not necessary, especially if you have installed detachable sideplates or bags. The main components in the kit are new inner fender braces. They are basicallythe same braces used in detachable accessories.

A lot of guys have sucessfully installed the wide tire by just making sure wiring under the fender is secured and protected to avoid rubbing.

Here is a list of the components in the wide tire kit and the individual piece prices from Zanotti's HD.

43197-04A Dunlop Screamin' Eagle GT502 180/60B17 Blackwall Tire 17" Rear $172.66

40502-06 Dunlop Tubes 17" Inner Tube 160/70-180/60-17 Center Metal Valve $20.24

43101-06 Dunlop Rim Strips Fits 17-inch Center Valve rims $3.48

59514-06 Rear Fender Inner side plate replacement bracket 2ea $9.87ea

4592 Screw 2ea $3.18ea

10065 cable strap 2ea $0.45ea

Hope this helps.

jmpancoast1, Thanks for the info. I may scip the kit and just do the tire. I have already installed detachable sideplates. the cost saved should cover mounting a balancing.

I know when I had mine done they mentioned having to move the engine a bit so that there were no issues with the drive. Not sure if that was a bunch of whoo haa but just a note to look for that when you do yours...

Sounds like a load of dealer induced bullsh!t. There should be no need for engine movement or change in engine aligment to install the 180mm tire on the 06 and later Dyna models.

that was my thought, they tried to show me the instructions... blah blah blah blah blah... not much I could do at that point, except complain, pay and then get my own service manual and do the work myself from then on out. Also go somewhere else for stuff I couldn't do myself.

Though mine was the first one they had done (in at least the 5 years that the service manager had been there) so probably nothing more then they didn't know how to do it and they decided to charge me the time it took them to figure it out and make up some xxxx and bull story. Oh well lesson learned.

Went ahead with the wide tire only instead of the kit on my 03 FXDWGI and there are not proplems at all. When I had the shocks off so the swing arm would drop down to install the axel. I put a jack under the wheel and raised it as high as it would go (the shocks bottom out 2" before this point) and check for clearance on the fender and the wiring from the tail lights and turn signals. There are not problems with the stock locations of wiring on my bike. The only thing that comes closen is the drive belt and it clears the side of the tire by 3/8".
The old tires pushed some in corners but now the bike just glides through with no resistance at all. I will stick with the Dunlaps in the future.
