Here's One For The Books

I met up with my HOG group to go for a lunch ride and of course there's always time to look at each other's scooters before leaving. One of my HOG members said, "What's that in your belt?"

At first I thought he was joking, but after looking at it carefully, some was wrong. I decided to go directly home to see what it was.

It turned out to be a 7/16 nut had gotten caught between the belt and the pulley and actually punched right through the belt! Believe it or not, it made NO NOISE while riding!

My Guardian Angel did her job that day!

Is there any damage done to the pullies from the bolt rubbing on them? I just replaced a broken belt on dyna due to a rock that got stuck in my from pulley. The service manual makes a point to mention the pullies should be checked for knicks or missing plating. Atleast you were able to make it home safely.

tjglide: It did NOT tear up the pulley. The H-D mechanic tried to warn me that I may need to purchase the high dollar pulley too, but when he pulled it off, there was no damage.

Fred1369: I have no idea when it happened. One thing is that unless the pulley was stopped in the right place, you wouldn't have been able to see the flaw. I was lucky it had stopped in the position that it was in when my buddies were looking at it.

YankeeBob: No missing hardware. Believe me , when the H-D mechanic saw what it was, he did a thorough inspection of the bike.
