FXDLI 07 Oil consumption

I have an 07 Low Rider with 5k miles on it. Changed the oil at 900 with regular hd 20-50 and then at 1800 with hd 20-50 syn3. At 5,000 it was down about 3/4 qt. Is it normal to use that amount on about 3,200 mi?

Not at all. You either have an issue with the amount refilled during the oil change, or you have a warranty issue.

HD will tell you that's an acceptable oil use amount but I wouldn't find it so. My 05 FB has 30K on the clock and I've yet to add any oil between amsoil changes at 5K. I think it may use, burn, whatever about 1/4 of a quart between changes.

I'm going to change the oil myself this time. I'll watch it closely over the next few thousand miles. I didn't think it should use much if any so thought I'd ask.

Did you check the levels at the same temp.? The oil level be significantly higher when it is hot. Considering the error factor when you check the oil at different times,temps,and levels of the ground, I don't think 3/4 qt. is too unreasonable, but that's just my opinion.

Yes, the temp was very close. I've talked to a few people locally as well as others on other websites that I would consider very knowledgeable folks. General concensus is that 1 qt. on 3,000 miles is nothing to worry about. It appears it's not going past the rings but out the breather into the intake etc.
Not that it will make a difference but I'm going to switch to Redline oil next time. I have a dealer 1 mile from my house.

If you didn't do the other services, and KNOW that it was dead on the "full" mark... I wouldn't assume it burnt any.

I worked with several techs, who... as long as it was above the "add" mark, considered they had done their job properly. I belonged to the opinion that it should pretty much be dead on the "full" mark after the test ride (engine at operating temperature), per the Service Manual.

I agree. I did it myself this time and it's dead on full after running about 5 min. I'll see how it goes from here.
