Clutch cable leaking oil

Hi All

Well I did a bone head move the other day in my own yard. I put myself in a pickel were I could not move my bike backwards.Long story short I hit a tree stump in my yard and stopped the bike short dead in its tracks. Was not going fast, under 5 mph. Bike is fine just my ego is hurt. I did notice that I pinched the clutch cable that runs underneath the bike. It's leakinging a few drops of oil. I'm not sure if its oil that was in the cable (It was very clean BTW) or oil from the tranny. What color is the tranny oil? What I did do was cleaned the oil up and applied a little RTV on the cable and black taped it. Seams to be fine. Is there any pressure build up there? Clutch works fine. I really don't want to mess with replacing it. I have a 07 Low rider with 2000 k on it. This is my first bike and having a blast with it. Needles to say I need to pay a little more attension on how to park it.

Thanks Mark

Mark,

All you really need for specialty tools to change the clutch cable is a quality set of snap ring pliers. I suspect the oil is coming from within the cable. Any lubricating oil will settle at the lowest point (bottom of the bike.) If you damaged the sheath on the cable the internal casing could be rubbing on the cable causing it to ultimately fray and break. It would still feel as though it is operating ok in some cases. I guess only you can decide whether you want to gamble on that or not. Some of the new clutch cables are not suppose to be lubed either but I am unclear as to those particular years. I'm sure you will get other comments on that.

Me, I'd change the cable.....and.....Watch those low stumps! Good luck!

I never really thought about the possibility of fraying the cable. I called my HD dealer and ordered a new Cable. I was surprized to hear it was only 35 dollars. Thats a no brainer. Don't want to break down anywhere. Thanks

Had a friend that happened to. He hit debri in the road at night when we were coming back from Upper state New York. Worked fine for about a week then popped. We cut it open after changing it and thats what we found. Ride Safe

Glad to hear you are changing it. In my opinion, if you can afford a $15,000 bike, you can afford a fairly cheap cable, a gasket, a quart of fluid, and an hour of your time to fix it. This will be one less unexpected occurrence you have to react to, as if there aren't enough on a bike already. Kudos to ya for a wise decision!

I had one leaking from a frayed area before. Really gets you scratching your head until you figure out that it runs lower than your tranny. LOL

Look fro a teflon coated cable, as long as your are changing it might as well get a good one that slides easier (especially if you have a hard to pull clutch set-up).
