Dyno tune question
Hi,
I need to get my bike dyno tuned after a top end/cam rebuild last spring, but due to hard starting need to remove the 4deg advance gear on my Woods TW-6 cams. I don't have the time to do the cam chest work at this point, but would like to get the bike tuned. My question is this, will the tune be affected by the absense/presence of the 4deg advance gear on the cam? I am thinking yes in terms of the DTT ignition setup, if I lower the cranking compression the timing might change, but not sure, so I figured I'd throw it out to the forum to see what folks had to say.
btw- using the Big-Boyz calculator (thanks Bean!), I came up with 191psi cold cranking compression, with lifter bleed down on open valves when I stop the motor and let it sit, this could be sightly higher? If I remove the 4deg advance gear, it drops to around 187psi.
Thanks (4 degrees!) in advance,
Dan

If you like the motor with the key, why not figure out why it's hard to start? Do you have releases?if so do you use 'em? Stock starter? Maybe try to add a revolution or 2 on the DTT software for starting delay? There should be some other options for you.
191 is not bad cranking #,that cam likes it there. But check your actual ccp, with my 98 GMR kit i had it was spec'd for one ccp and the heads came in at another CCP(my fault for not double checking)

Good point TX Chop-
Can you adress the starting issues rather than retarding the cams?
Lost of ways to improve this rather than cam timing.

What exactly does the advancer do? I'm presumming it allows you to adjust the cams and allow them to open earlier? Does the advancer change the intake closing?

Thanks for the advice TXChop, I do need to check the actual ccp. I am not real savvy with adjusting the DTT yet, I'll have to pursue that angle more. I have been thinking of the compression releases or a bigger starter motor. I haven't checked prices but imagine they are around the same, in which case I'd rather the releases.
arealinvestor- The advance gear simply replaces the gear on the rear cam with the timing aligment mark 4 degrees advanced, in my case intake close happens at 36deg rather than the 40deg of the TW-6. Moves the torque curve down the RPM range a bit. I am getting it dyno tuned on 9/5, I'll post the results- I am hoping for 100ftlbs of torque at 2500, we'll see.

Will be interesting to see how the troublemaker exhaust fares, with a 2 into 1 your goal of 100 by 2500 would be easily done, btw, who is doing the tune?

BVBOB,
I am getting the tune done by Jim at Illinois Harley, only because that is the dealer I bought the bike from all those years ago. If anyone can recommend a tuner in the Chicago area I'd be open to suggestions.
I picked those pipes since Colonel Sanders has had such success with them with a similar build.

this should be fun to follow. dano69, im sure bobby can overnite you a gear, and it takes about 5 minutes to change.
i installed a woods belt drive cam set on a 103 running the tw6. on dyno and track, that combo liked the cams straight up.
remmber, your not just closing the intake earlier, you are moving ALL cam events!! i would really time the cam where you intend on running it before paying the dyno guy.
looking forward to your graphs--------

claydbal- the gear is already on the bike, my original thought was to take it off due to hard starting, but I think I'll figure something else out. My purpose in the build is to have high torque as low as I can get it. I don't tend to run at the high end of the rpm range which was why I went with the TW-6. I am figuring that my max hp will probably be a lower number than my max torque, but if I can keep the torque curve above 100ft lbs from 2500 up to 5k-ish, I'll be a happy camper. This is my first build , so it will be exciting to get the dyno tune done (finally!). It has been a real learning experience, let me tell ya!

Time those cams straight up, work out your starting issues (battery, CReleases, cables, starter) and based on what you have in that motor, you WILL get over 100 ft lbs where you want it.. I'll throw a guess out there-110-115 max fl lbs. Can't wait to see it...
Goo luck & Hope you have a good tuner!

Thanks Totenkopf, I just sent Otto an email (no phone # on his site). We'll see what happens.
btw- I've always liked that picture of your bike- I first saw it when looking for info on the RB Racing LSR's- sweet!
