Thumbs up GMR 124" first dyno numbers!

The shop called and gave me an update on my bike. They're waiting on a needle for the carb to do the final dyno tuning.

A quick review of the build.

4.125" x 4.625" = 123.62 ci
JIMS crank reworked by Darkhorse
S&S .640 cams
GMR stock ratio rocker arms
Stage IV R&R heads 84.6cc 1.9/1.625
-10 cc reverse dome JE pistons
10.8:1 CR
183 ccp (calculated)
CV51 carb, intake manifold, and air filter
DTT ignition
SE billet cam plate and late model oil pump
Hooker Troublemaker pipes (stepped 1 5/8" - 1 7/8" - 2 1/2") w/medium baffle installed

There is some interesting info here I think.

128/128 SAE
131/131 STD
(I assume these are 5th gear pulls since that is 1:1.)

He said the exhaust note was MUCH quieter than he'd expected and he thinks the pipes are holding it back. He's going to pull the baffles during the next tuning session and see what happens. We both think it's going to pick up a little power. If it does then I'll be ordering a set of the louder baffles which should prove to be less restrictive. However, we may find that these pipes are simply too small with the first stage being only 1 5/8". We'll see.

He also tried it with the filter removed and picked up only 1 ft/lb of TQ and no HP. And I thought the SE filter was supposed to be restrictive? As is often said, the flow bench doesn't tell you everything. I think that's true in large part because the flow bench measures steady state while the engine runs in pulses. Anyway, this is good news since there is no need to go to the larger Woods filter and give up more leg room.

He thinks the intake port and manifold are a bit on the small side for this build. I think he's right but it's alot of trouble to remedy this so I'll leave well enough alone for now since it's already making good power.

Also interesting was that he said he was surprised at the really good low end TQ that it made. I guess these restrictive pipes are good for something! I was afraid that this area might be the weak area due to the low CR of this build.

The needle should be in tomorrow. He's going to see if he can ring a little more out of it then.

All in all I'm pleased. I said I expected low to mid 130s STD and it's already there. Perhaps with the loud baffles, a little more dyno tweaking, some fresh gas (the stuff has been sitting a while now), and a little more breaking in (they say it's 85% broken in at this point) it'll pick up a few more ponies.

Man, I can't wait to ride this thing!!!

Red face

To the powers that be...

The reasons I put this in the engine section are because this thread does not include a dyno sheet and because the thread was meant to discuss the engine components used, how they relate to the numbers produced, and what parts may or may not need to be changed in order to produce more power. These are NOT final numbers for this build. I had full intentions of putting the final dyno sheet in this dyno section. Again, my main intention for this thread was for the discussion of the engine details and any potential engine part changes to be made. For example, it has been speculated that the SE filter included with the CV51 is restrictive at this CI level but my testing has suggested that in fact it is not. I think that type of info is suitable for the engine section. I see posts in there all the time asking "what kind of filter" or "what kind of exhaust does this build need?".

Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word "dyno" in the title!

Anyway, JMHO. Thanks for listening!

CS, First off Congrats, Second off... question is this the standard paper SE filter..I did testing with my build as well and found that I picked up 2-3 hp and TQ with that filter off so I know it was holding mine back. Maybe the filter is different mine was the standard SE kit with backing on a 07 . Those numbers are great for a rough tune!!

NICE!!!!

The numbers sound good, but i would like to see the curves as well. Where does the tq HIT and where does it fall off. I wonder if just cutting/re-welding the baffles would work for you, but are you going to make a run first without the baffles as that would tell if its holding a lot of hp back.
As for the filter, your right the S/E shoudl be enough, but I found on the dyno that my Wood's air fitler made 0 difference. Worth the money, probably not, but i like it, got it mostly to be able to run his cover anyway.

I am holding off on my Wood's carb for now, but will experiment towards the end of this season with it. I am going to stick with CV51 carb and the manifold it came with as well, but will try a modded S+S version witht he Woods carb later in the year.

How did your clutch hold up?

Nice!

I'm sure this makes more power than an S&S 124, but how does the money compare? Did you spend less, more?

"question is this the standard paper SE filter"

I think you're talking about the standard SE filter. This is the one that is included with the CV51 filter. It's quite a bit larger than the regular SE filter (I have one of those too.) This filter is K&N style, btw.

"just ride it"

That's probably some of the best advice given on this forum. It's easy to get caught up chasing numbers when what really matters is how much fun you have riding it.

TXCHOP "The numbers sound good, but i would like to see the curves as well. Where does the tq HIT and where does it fall off."

I'll let ya'll know as soon as I do. I haven't seen the sheets yet. All I know is that he said he was very impressed with the power it made down low. He said it came on really quick...which I wasn't really expecting with a 640 cam and 10.8:1 CR. I think the pipe and 1.9 intake valves must have helped in this regard.

"are you going to make a run first without the baffles as that would tell if its holding a lot of hp back."

He's going to do some testing with the baffles removed and we'll go from there. If it picks up anything then I'll order the free flowing baffles.

The clutch? He didn't mention anything about it so I assume it didn't slip.

"I'm sure this makes more power than an S&S 124, but how does the money compare? Did you spend less, more?"

How much is an S&S 124" + essentials? To be honest, I don't even know what I spent on this thing. Haven't thought about it (that would take some of the fun out of it!)

Congrats Colonel!!!

I bet it will for sure run cooler than an S&S 124".

You should get lots of miles out of this one.

Happy trails!!!

Cool

Oh no man, I ain't changein' the pipes. I may change the baffles but not the pipes. Besides, I've bragged so much about how good these pipes are that I can't turn back now. Who was it that was baggin' on my 98" numbers saying something like, "...you expect us to believe those numbers with those crappy pipes? Yea, right!" Was that you oh1deuce? Might have been SEDELUXE? Well, anyway, they made ok power with a moderate 124" I'd say, so I bet they weren't so crappy with the 98" afterall, huh?
