Lesson lernt, Dont street Race,

Hi guys, after a great first outing at the drag strip the other week
my bloods been boilding for some more action,
On the way to Training Last night, Pulled up at the lights next to a Rice burner, he takes off and i thought ild give you a go,
had em 1st 2nd an then a Car pulls in front of me with no warning,
Locked the bike up the put it in to a sideways slide, the back of the car was coming at me very fast, was so close but i clipped the LH rear of car sending me and dyna to the ground,
must of been doing 40-50mph, hit the road hard, slid 20 ft with bike on top of me, Was pinned down under bike, i couldnt move
it was main road 5 o,clock traffic, then had some people lift bike off me and carry me to side of road, Ambulance an police called,
Ive broken bones in foot and fractured knee, grazes all over,
I consider my self very lucky,
I think ill keep the drags for the track from now on,

Glad you are able to post in such a short time after. The bike can be replaced, you can't.

I wish you a quick and full recovery !!!

Great call to keep the racing on the track.

There is just too many practical reason not to race on public roads, I'd say you found an important one.

Good to hear it didn't turn out worse than it did.

Actually there isn’t any good time to race on public streets. Racing of any kind should be done only at sanctioned events and/ or facilities that designed to handle the type of racing involved.

Safety is hard enough to insure even when proper equipment and emergency personnel are on standby, much less throwing in other traffic that may not have a clue about what’s going on around them.

Folks that go out street racing will put themselves and others at risk, and when something goes wrong it gives all racing a bad name. The News Media always calls street racing accidents “Drag Racing”; which in reality it has nothing to do with the sport. Happens all the time.

If you want to be a real racer, go to the track.

First of all,
Glad you are still here-Mechanical objects can be replaced but not your life.
Regardless of time or place, anyone can get hurt anywhere, but you have to pick your battles. When I used to do this serious and for money, we did it late at night in a remote part of the city but I understand how a fast VTwin rumbling under you rolling up to another bike gets you pumped up, knowing you might be able to take him-you just want to go, like right now. For me, though, the more I go to the track, the less I want to street race. You learn what bikes you can take and which ones you can't and I transfer that knowledge to the street-almost like knowing the outcome in your mind beforehand so that it's not really nessesary to actually engage the other bike next to you. The track keeps me calm...and it's alot safer. Also, the track has the legit racers who are usually faster and more experienced than most of the posers on the street so they are your true challengers anyway. The more guys you take down at the track, the more you realize the majority of guys on the street aren't worth your time...or worth the fuel burned or possible wear or damage to your parts on your hot rod. Not to mention the cops, or the risk of a car pulling out in front of you.
99% of the time I just let the guy go ahead knowing inside me that I could crush him if I wanted to-It's the 1% of the time (like my last street race 3 months go when a Gixer got under my skin) that still worries me...

I know you will recover quickly and take what you learned from this accident with you forever-

I agree totally with you PM.After taking Keith Code's Superbike classes & being on the track. The less I feel inclined to show those behind me how quick i could disappear on them in corners. It's not even worth the added risk.If I want to really show them they can't really ride,I kindly invite them to the road racing track to see if they can really take a sportsbike to the next level!!!

understood here as well, and i still street race. there is a difference tho, here is rural, the only thing that can kill ya is your own stupidity, mechanical failure , or an animal. (just like at the track, although less likely to hit a deer at thetrack). but racing in town during peak drive time is stupid twice! if you survive, there is a serious ticket that cost as much as the next power upgrade!!!!!!

happy you are ok, and cant be sanctimonious, but there are times to pick battles, and time to chill, like PW said.

5pm traffic wasnt the ideal time Correct, some good words of wisdom here,
It does give you a wake up call of how fragile life is,
Ive had my foot ripped off in a auto accident and 2 lots of open head surgury,
how boring would life be with out risks, we take em every day,
Heres to keeping the rubber on the road an staying uprite,

Dan, just read this sorry to hear that mate!
I have had a few accident's myself both in trucks car's & Bikes & dirt bikes. and i've slid up the track clocking 110mph on my butt and got up walked away with sore foot & after fixing the bike was back drag racing again.
the thing is you might have made a bad call but accidends can happen at anytime no matter how carefull you are. so if you don't like it don't ride but you can still get run down and killed just walking. thats life.

now mate you have to get on your feet and learn to handle the pain, the only way to get better after breaking bones is hard work and pain.
i broke my left leg in four places between knee and ankle as well as compound fractures. they put a rod inside the bone and used pins for support, latter they took the pins out and things got painfull but i worked at it hard and was back drag racing my bike in two years and going quicker on the same bike at the track.
just saw two guys have accidents on Top Fuel bikes last night within 15 minutes of each other, one had just ran a 6.20 quarter mile pass and bumped the wall he got out of it ok they say he will be racing today, that was a qualifying pass. the other top bike was an old 120 inch rider got out of shape off the line and bike went violently side to side threw him off then bike whipped him b4 spinning on its side up the track he is ok but in pain.
good luck mate & when they tell you to start trying to put weight on it go for it! keep off the pain killers i won't take them myself.
cheers

Good to hear you survived Okay.Street racing for me has always been something I could never resist. In this neck of the woods it is very easy to do it out in farm country.Open fields, little traffic, straight roads.Once in a while it happens in town, either way it is always happens when there is not much chance of getting in a mess.Hang in there.
