Perhaps Curly's has changed in the last few years, I haven't been back since they totally screwed up my 10K service.
Back in 1999 I took my FLHRI in to the 10K service, get tires changed, and get the HD tach put on. First of all, when I paid for the bike, they had charged me separate full amounts for the tire change and the 10K service and the tach installation, like they had done each alone. Full price for the tire change, though they already had to take the wheels off for the 10K service. So right there they were a rip off.
When I got the bike back, it was totally filthy, with greasy finger marks and dirt from the job everywhere, they didn't bother to clean up after themselves. Would have probably they charged me extra to clean up their mess.
I rode it back to work and noticed a dragging sound in the front, but couldn't find anything making the sound. I turned around and went back and got the service writer to check it out. He immediately took it back in the shop and had the mechanic re-do the front wheel bearing. I had to come back the next day to get it, but at least they gave me a ride back to work.
When I first got it back, I noticed that the tach looked a little funny, but I was too upset by the other things to tell exactly why. When I got it home and looked closely, it was obvious that the tach was installed on off center, abut half an inch or more, so looked lopsided on the bike ( the HD tach fits right over the center of the bars). I took this back and they did refit the tach correctly, and replaced the center riser cover for free.
I thought it was over then, but no! About 1500 miles down the road, I loose a half inch strip all along the drive belt to the rear wheel. I take it to a local independent shop to get replaced, afraid to go back to Curly's. They said that the rear wheel bearing was almost completely frozen up and had to replace it. The bearing had gotten so hot it had apparently caused the belt damage. They replace this and the belt and I'm back on the road.
Then another 1000 miles or so, and the main drive sprocket comes loose off the drive shaft, causing me to be stuck up in the mountains with my wife. I can't blame this on Curly's, but I sure wasn't going to take it back to them. I took the bike to Greensboro HD, had the sprocket replaced and another 10K service done at less that 5K more miles than the first 10K, because I just didn't trust the work done at Curly's.
Got the bike back form Greensboro HD, showroom clean! They said the front wheel bearing had to be replaced because it had been done wrong the first time. Great customer service.
A long story from several years ago, maybe they have changed, but I certainly am not going to take my bike back there to find out. No one I talk to will take their bike to be worked on at Curly's, they go to Tilly's or Greensboro HD. Curly's "boutique" area is bigger than their garage area, so that should tell you something.
I would recommend Greensboro HD, great shop, great service, and they don't screw up your bike. As far as I'm concerned, go to Curly's at your own risk.
