Dealer throws away new takeoff items
HIGH COUNTRY HARLEY DAVIDSON in Colorado will not even let you buy their new takeoff items. They also do not give them back to the customer unless he has a big fit about it. . They would rather throw the items in the garbage.
Sure seems like the Stealer is throwing away good money but also it makes the consumer buy new parts when we could be doing mother nature a small service....JMO.......
I continue to tell all to avoid this dealer because of the royaly crappy customer service. The make it a point and have fired employee's that try to give discounts,,, not to give discounts because they dont need to.. because they will sell the parts, bikes,, ect.. anyway...

On the other hand, Duluth H-D in northern MN has given me some smoke'n ( their cost) deals on items scheduled for buy-back from the factory. Seems a few times a year H-D will buy-back items that don't move from dealers. For example, Holley two barrel and jet kit for $190.00.

That's not unusual. It's called "making a market". If there are fewer parts in the pipeline, they will sell more replacements.
On the other hand, how do you know that they do not sell the parts on eBay? Many dealers have an eBay department to move the old stuff.
Keep smiling.

The way I see it is if I bought a bike and then had the dealer add some goodies you could bet my take offs would be going home with me if I wanted them since I've already bought them. I've seen take offs on clearance tables at several of the local dealers.

I agree. Some folks leave the parts with the dealers out of sloth or forgetfulness, though. Other takeoff parts are exchanged by the dealers prior to sale of the bike, for example add-on chrome replacement items.
Definitely I would take any spare parts home, especially muifflers.

dealers
My local dealer refuses to let any take off parts go out....they throw the stuff away periodically, unless you request the parts when you pick up your bike. They also let ONE vendor buy all the oddball non-moving stock that stacks up once a year or so (or so i'm told by a counter guy)...the guy buys all of it lock stock & barrel. I asked how to get in on that action to no avail. Told them i make hundreds of dollars a year just peddling take off parts and hustling parts on E-Bay myself. The counter guy also does it with his own connects (he usta own his own shop)...he knows how much $$$$ is being flushed by trashing it. Don't understand it....WTF. Seems really not-bright to me.

The person that told me this I would trust without question and this fits for this dealership... just seems like a huge waste to me.. seems like this dealer is not really interested in customer service.
Now I have dealt with the sales staff and they are a really good bunch of guys and the parts guys are very good too... but get to the service department... just cant find enough bad to say and certainly cant find any good to say.... I continue to hear at least once a week someone who got screwed by these guys...
you would think that with 5 dealers with in 50 miles of them they would try harder but I guess they make enough not to care. I can drive a few miles and get a discount on a regular basis.. do have to admit that the sales tax is 3.5 percent higher....
And I never stop smiling.... I can aways say that no matter how bad my day is the person laying on the table in front of me is having a worse day...
Ride safe...

I tell this to all my friends and acquaintances - you really need to load up on tools and manuals and do the work yourself. It's always been a lot of the fun of motorcycling for me. It also helps if you know your machine if it ever breaks down on the road. Don't ask why I say that.
As to that service department, I've heard of some bad ones where I am, too.
When I bought my new Ultra in 2004, I told the salesman to take a good look at it because he was never going to see it again.

Local dealer here has a couple of events a year and the HOG chapter has a table and they sell the take-offs to raise money. I believe if you ask for them when having parts installed, they give them to you.

Yep, I just did the same about a month ago with a new Street Glide. They looked at me like I was from another planet when I ordered parts for my 103 build for it and said I'd do the work myself. I hate going to the dealer...
Regarding takeoff's - those are your parts and you should have every right to expect them when the work is done. You paid for 'em.

Are you aware that the complete exhaust system on an EG runs over $1,000 retail?? Don't think he did you any favors. They can use your stuff to repair a wrecked bike and still charge the insurance company full price.

Many of these dealers SAY they trash the parts, but you can make book that someone's brother-in law or neer-do-well uncle or just outright crooked service manager is selling them on Ebay.
These sellers will be caught. Sooner or later the IRS will be checking to differenciate between hobbyists or small timers, and those that are really turning a profit without paying income taxes. These are the same guys that will put in a "save" bid at the last minute, if they think that the part is not selling for enough. Just check thier feedback, you can see the pattern.
