I just picked up my 2008 SE Ultra also. It does run hot but nothing outrageous. I'm installing an oil temp gauge soon. I had to take my cover to a seamstress to open up the section a few inches for the antennas plus it doesn't reach the ground..sort of like a pair of high water pants. The tranny whines in 5th gear. I'm impressed with the motor's torque but then it is 110".

So I’m riding it, if anything the knock is getting louder and more pronounced. Seems to me it’s coming from the top of the front cylinder in the 2500 to 3000 RPM range.

Its the rocker arm/spring hitting the rocker box. Its a known issue. When they replaced the cylinders on my buddy's '07 SE Ultra, they ground our some of the inside of the rocker lid where the rocker arm/spring was hitting it. Quieted down the top end 80%.
Has your rear cylinder started leaking oil yet?
Moco is having fits with the 110" in the bagger.

Traded my 05 heritage for the 08 ultra SE last saturday. I was going for the standard ultra, took the wife with me to pick out colors, and she would only settle for the "pretty white and silver one over there". I do love that woman!
Fantastic bike! Fast, smooth, quiet, comfy.
I get a little tranny whine off and on, but nothing to complain about. Sounds almost like a bell ringing.
Even at highway speed, my right leg gets hot. Not scorching, but hot. But then I live in Texas, and it's been low 90's and humid.
Scary part is the throttle started sticking after about 100 miles. When I let go, it sort of drifts back to idle in a couple of seconds.
Headset doesn't work worth sh*^ and you only get one. All that money, you'd think they give you two good headsets.

The headsets that come with the bike are awful. I'd just go over to J&M Audio and buy theirs. We did on our last Ultra and will be using them for our new bike as well. Thanks for the ride report...and good luck with the bike, the silver/white is very nice...

My 08 Ultra SE3 had a pretty loud clatter as well. reported it to the dealer at the 1000 mi service but they told me it sounded normal. Rode it to Sturgis and back to CAL -- 4200 miles and now it's much quieter.... Not sure whether to be relieved or worried... Original rattle was at 1800 - 2100 RPM. That's pretty much gone but now there is a slight rattle when I get on it around 3000 rpm....

There is a wealth of CVO knowledge over at: www.cvoharley.com. They can tell you how to "wake it up" and help you zero in on any noises or other issues.
Congrats on the bike!
