What is the difference between recovery and maturity? I hear a lot of people talk of being spiritual when to me, it sounds like they are talking more about maturity. It is just a discussion question.

recovery to me is God doing for me what i can not do for myself and maturity is dozens of good habits i need to develop as a foundation of maturity. the least of which include knowledge, perspective, conviction, skills and character. these are things i have learned in AA and a relationship with a God of my understanding.

When I asked around, the answer I liked the best was...The decisions I make are about maturity and the way I feel about those decisions is spirituality.

Recovery, as it relates to being clean and sober, is the regaining or the restoration of one's mental and physical health.

Maturity, as it relates to being clean and sober, implies a perfected condition, or that someone is fully developed.

Example- After five months of sobriety I confidently gave the open cold beer that was bought for me to someone else.

And yes, being spiritual, as it relates to being clean and sober, does help tremendously. For I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. Yet, make no mistake; the world is full of spiritual derelicts.

Thus, if your ultimate goal is 100% sobriety, the onus, the obligation, the "hard work" if you will, still falls on you.

Good luck and God Bless

I am sober because I choose not to drink.
I am free from drug addiction because I choose not to do drugs.

No one can be clean and sober until they choose to be clean and sober.

Please let me share the perspective of one who has never drank much is his life and only attended a few AA meetings to accompany someone I was dating who regularly attended AA meetings.

There are three separate concepts here. Sobriety means just that, not drinking or using mind altering drugs. Recovery and maturity are two other concepts that can mean a lot of different things to different people but I'll say what they mean to me. Sobriety seems to be a "state", you are either drinking/using or you are not. Recovery seems to me to be a process, something one goes through when one is not drinking/using and learning how to live a non self destructive life. "Maturity" to me seems to be to be the goal of recovery. Maturity does not mean one has it all together, just that one is a reasonably well functioning adult in society.

Once I understood that I was powerless over ALCOHOL, I readily admitted the fact.
That was on 10 Jun 1996, & I STILL understand that I am STILL powerless over it.
