Melted Battery Post

[110Hardcore]

A little background first...
Bought a Hardcore II in October, replaced ignition switch, replaced Headlight, replaced marker/turn lights with LEDs. Had to track down wires in harness that were never connected originally to make most of it work. Bike runs fine, with a RevTech 110 (1800cc), 6-speed.
Problem:
Ran around town a little today, got home and shut it off to open garage. Would not start. Removed seat found positive post melted a bit. Battery was rated at 310 CCA. Did a parasitic check for drainage with none found.
Seen a melted post before on a car but don't remember the cause. Am thinking the starter pulled too many amps to cause the melt. But do not know the solution other than a larger CCA rating, if that is the problem

Any help?

Most likely it is the result of a poor or loose connection at that terminal.

All good points made, excessive resisitance at the battery positive+ terminal due to a bad/loose connection. Starter pulling too many amps & melted the teminal.

There is no greater draw in the average electrical circuit than the starter. If it has for one reason or another lost or has a reduced ground circuit due to corrosion the starter when called upon will easily draw up to 3 times its normal amperage. It will seek a ground if it has to do it from within itself.

If not the Posi terminal at least check the ground connection to the frame/starter.
If you have troubles starting it again you could run a heavy ground cable to the starter from the battery. A way of checking it is take your neg (black) booster cable, attach one end to the starter housing & the other to the battery ground terminal to see if it alleviates the problem

Thanks for the assistance. It was a loose connection (although it seemed tight). Going to replace the cables anyway, as I do not like them, they look kinda cheesy and cheap. Battery getting good charge up tonight, will take it to the Zone or someplace and see if it checks out.

How many cranking amps are you pulling for that 110? I'm thinkin about putting a 124" in when my 80" dies. I just curious to how much cranking amps I will need to run.

Couldn't say... Know that it had a 310 CCA battery in it. Seemed to start okay until I melted the post. Going to a 600 CCA Lithium from Antigravity Batteries (antigravitybatteries.com). A little expensive, but the stats look good and they aren't made in China. The battery physical size is about an inch smaller in height and length.
