PR113 and Coil

Went for a ride today and while entering the on ramp to highway I hit the throttle hard and a few seconds later heard loud back fire and then was down to one cylinder? Nursed it home with the front cylinder not firing. After checking the plugs and going through the diagnostic of where the problem may be and I have determined that it is the coil. The bottom of the coil is not firing but would like to know how to check if a coil is good or bad? The engine does have a Crane Hi4-Dual Fire Ignition module but does not appear to be the problem. I am not sure which is the primary or secondary on the coil for resistance testing or how to test it with an Ohm meter...

The crane hi4 is a single fire ignition,,if it was a dual fire all you would is swap plugs wires from one to another..So with it being a single fire is a single or dual coils,,you could rewire the coil to test the module and coil...make the front cyl fire on the rear coil and vice versa...

Hey Dave,

I did swap out the plugs and that is basically how it was determined that the coil may be bad? I tested the seconday winding with a multimeter and found the resistance to be over 80,000 ohms on both uppper and lower towers that afternoon after the ride. I have ordered a new Crane DUAL FIRE COIL H1-4 to better match my Crane HI-4 Dual Fire Ignition module.

What is weird is the secondary coil resistance started to drop off each day until it reached a steady state of 46,000 lower tower and 54,000 ohms upper tower? I will let you know how it all works out.

well the new coil has been installed and runs great. I had to back off on the advance timing of the ignition to get rid of the knock but all in all it is good. hope to have it dyno'd this week and will post the numbers in the correct forum...
