starting help

All done with the new build and now it won't fire.
Evo engine, 5-speed kickstart, S+S super E carb, ultima ignition and coils.

It has spark and compression. Looks to be ruffly timed correctly in that the spark and compression coincide. Mostly I get a single pop when its kicked. Once in a while it will give three or four sputers.

Any suggestions on where to look fo the problem? THanks.

Are the plugs wet or dry after a few attempts? Sounds like fuel ( or lack of ) may be the problem. I would also double check the intake manifold for air leaks where they bolt to the heads.

After a few attempts the plugs are 90% wet, with the end of the strap and a little of the center electrode dry. The plug gets sooty black on half and stays clean on the other half.

Well the ign you are using is not set up for kick start, so if you get very lucky you might get it to start. You need a ign system that does not need 2-3 revolutions to fire.

We just built a S&S 96 crate, kicker only, The ign with S&S is able to be put into kicker mode, same deal we had to then install a stroker kicker on it as we needed just a tad more OMPH to roll it over. Starts now on 3-4 kicks cold.

The ignition has a kick or electric setting. Sure would love to get it to start cold on 2-3 kicks, sounds like a perfect build.

HMM I was not aware that the ultima had that option so that is good, now what plug gap are you running, and are you using a spacer from intake to carb. What it the intermidate jet is in the carb, float level need to be checked.

With a kicker the jetting timing, etc needs to be spot on. If we can get a 10.5.1 96 stroker to start with a kicker than you can get that 80 inch going.

Plug gap is .039
Intermediate jet is .028
No spacer just the 1/4" insulator block

Finaly got it to fire. After a min or so of idleing some very foamy oil started to come out of the breather hose. Whats that mean? Thanks.

Well you may have a leaking check ball , and the oil was allowed to fill the crank case. With a kicker a crank case that has excessive oil would be hard to start.

Foamy oil, Also make sure your return line and vent line are not crossed to the oil tank. Ignition timing is critical.
