I've got flames!
So yesterday, I finally got around to installing the Big Sucker air cleaner on my bike. I installed the Wild Pig slip-ons a week ago. After I got everything back on and tweaked the idle mixture screw a bit (stock CV carb), I went out for a ride. The bike seems to run great. It pulls hard and there aren't any flat spots or hiccups during acceleration. A little pop here and there on hard decel, but not a big deal. However, I happened to notice that it shoots blue flames out when that happens... the higher the rpms, the bigger the flames. Plugs appear to be ok... a little dark, but not dripping wet or anything. And when I took my finger and swabbed the inside of the pipes, there was some black soot.
I haven't done a mileage test yet.
So, should I be worried? The bike seems to run awesome otherwise. No problems with starting or idling either. If it's just a little rich on overrun, I'm tempted to leave it alone.
Oh, yeah, it was jetted by the previous owner, but I haven't pulled the carb off yet, so I don''t know what jets he put in or it still has the stock needle.

Now you just need some blue ghost flames on the tins and you'll be all set...
Hopefully you can figure out what's causing it...sure some knowledgeable members of this forum can shed some light...
Good luck,
Pat

"Plugs appear to be ok... a little dark, but not dripping wet or anything. And when I took my finger and swabbed the inside of the pipes, there was some black soot".
Ok, the flames are caused by excess fuel that is (obviously) not getting burnt during the combustion cycle.. And the excess is lighting after the event has happened =flame throwing back fires.
The little dark plugs is something I would address, you should NOT have that much soot or darkened plugs after just 1 ride. Especially since too much fuel can also wash the oil off the cylinder walls & cause pre-mature wear there..
Besides your kewl Flame throwers..

I finally took the carb apart the other day. My mileage isn't where it should be. Turns out I have a dynojet kit in it.
So, I want to rebuild it back to stock. Can I get the stock jet needle and emulsion tube from Harley?

go to HD dealer and metric dealer, they may have take off parts for free or cheap. most install jet kits along with hype--erchargers and V&H pipes. i just corrected a 1700 yamaha. they installed one jet kit for the pipes, and another kit for the A/C!!!!! no kidding, they sold him two complete jet kits. i threw all that junk in trash, returned to stock and tweaked the mix screw------ran great and mileage shot back up to 40.
hoping you get stock stuff back in there, it will be a good runner again.
but post video of the flames before ya fix it.

So, to rebuild to stock, do I need anything else other than the jet holder, needle, and spring? I got the jets already. Gonna start with a 46 slow and 190 main and go from there.

silent1-
Generally, if it has a DJ kit, it has had the diaphram slide vacuum hole drilled to .128 (1/8") as per DJ instructions..
Check first & make sure.. I find this size too big..
So if you want totally stock, the complete slide will need replaced..
I like my slides drilled, but to just under .100 ONLY...
Works great & gas mileage is still great too.. But that's me..
Your jetting sounds about right, to start with anyhow..

Ok, let me make sure I understand what I need as I plan on doing this over the weekend. I need:
1. Slide Diaphragm
2. Needle
3. Jet Holder
4. Spring
I plan on following the instructions on Nightrider's site to put it all together.
Did I leave out anything?

silent 1, while you are correcting the carburetion, might i suggest another much needed part to finish the cure?
buy a DTT ignition controller, after confirming carb is back to normal, dial in the timing. you will cure the low end and smooth the engine =
oh, yes, sounds like you have your stuff together on carb fix.

Not as long as your 190 main-jet is not from a DJ kit.
Cause DJ jets do not fit HD emulsion tubes.. So U know...
