05 Electraglide Carb with Gas/exhaust fumes while riding? Carb Adjustment or ?
I've got an O5 Eglide Standard, Carb, SE slipons, SE air cleaner kit, and a Dynojet kit that according to the previous owner is set up with idle mix screw at 2-1/2 turns out, 170 main jet, changed intermediate t0 48, I haven't taken the carb off and checked it yet. I smell exhaust gas fumes when I'm riding, also it is noticeable when it's at idle. My old softtail 87' evo, had a carb with a similar open air cleaner and I never noticed the gas exhaust fume smell. It had a stock CV carb only rejetted for exhaust and aircleaner. I just rode about 200 miles yesterday and Its not bad, but I know it's something that shouldn't be there. I"ve only had the bike a week, love it except for that. I was doing some checking in the garage and there is no gas fume smell on the left side, but when the bike is running, even idling it's really noticeable at the carb. I don't have any wet leaks I can see, I'm beginning to wonder if the kit was bad or he did something wrong. The bike runs fine though. Any ideas? I'm thinking of finding a stock CV carb and just rejetting it for the mods (aircleaner, pipes) and see if that makes a difference. Anybody had a similar issue?
I just pulled the air cleaner off to check the filter, It's a KN "ArlenNess", It had signs of fuel puddling at the bottom of the filter and was still a little damp. I took it off and am cleaning it now. I started the bike and the throttle seems to push a hard stream of gas into the carb but hey it's suppose to do that haha. I'm thinking maybe it's pumping more fuel than the motor can burn? What was cause that from a dynojet kit? wrong jet?, needle? the emulsion tube? The breathers were not clogged. Any help is appreciated.

take the dyno jet kit out
Ran into a similar issue on a 03 FLHT, slip-ons and Ness AC, had a 48 slow jet and a 180 main jet, adjustable needle, assumed it was a dyno jet.
Best I could do was 150 miles on a tank, went to Tilley's and bought stock parts, needle, 45 slow jet and 190 main, set idle mixture around 2 turns out.
Combined MPG went from 31 to 41, runs better and the plugs are tan.
Talked to 3 good HD techs and they all told me the same thing.
The CV carbs are pretty close stock even with slip-on's and a better AC.
If you deal with Tilley's talk to Dale in parts, he'll know what you need and likely have it in stock.

Well the float valve was stuck, and the float was set high. That problem fixed. Now... it wont pull over 2800 rpms in all gears. It seems to rev and idle fine with no load. I pulled the plugs after going around 10 miles and they looked tan/whitish. fine. It coughs and even stalls underload at around 2500 rpms and above. It's got 190 main, 45 slow, stock string, undrilled slide. Any ideas?

I'll try some fresh plugs tomorrow and the exhaust smell I talked about is gone now.

New plugs might help. Assuming you didn't damage the diaphram on the slide and it's installed properly, are you sure you've got the throttle cable adjusted to fully open?? Just a thought. How did you adjust the air/fuel mixture screw?? Are you sure the needle jet (part that the needle slides in and out of) is installed properly. If you look in the throat of the carb you should see part of it sticking up into the throat.

I believe the diaphram is ok, it has suction or vacum it can be felt and heard (hiss). The throttle butterfly opens fully at full grip twist. Air/Fuel is all the way in and 2.5 turns out. the needle jet is in with the leadin chamfer opening up to the needle (sticking up into the throat). I'll buy some new plugs tomorrow. This has been a bear of an easy carb jet swapout, haha

I played around with the adjustment screws this morning, everything from 1.5 turns to 3.5 turns, a little different on the idle side but still coughing as before.

HaHaHa, I can't believe it but it's fixed. The float valve was defective so it waswn't a total lose but the end problem was that I had the air cleaner to carb gasket on backwards and was blocking an air hole. Since I had attached the gasket to the air cleaner to speed up the put together process it went unnoticed each time. It runs great now, has 190/45 jets and the sportster needle. I still have the gas fume a little but I think that may have more to do with the stage 1 air cleaner, lower fairings and a 12" windshield. Hell, I'm just happy to be riding again. I'll have to see what the sportster needle does to the mpg but all else seems to be great. Thanks to everyone for the ideas and letting me vent the frustrations. haha

Sometimes it's just the simple things.
