Throttle Hesitation

This is my first post, so be patient.

I have an '87 FXRS. Just recently I noticed a hesitation in my throttle response. When running low RPMs if I go open throttle the bike hesitates like it's not getting gas for a split second. It does the same thing when I open the throttle to downshift. Also, I was sitting at a red light with a buddy the other night at idle. I hit the throttle and the bike just cut out on me. I restarted it and tried the same thing a couple more times and the same thing happened.

I talked to mechanic who is also a personal friend and he said the float could be stuck, but I wanted to check here for any more ideas.

Accelerator Pump? Easy check (if you have one), remove the air cleaner and look to see if it's working.
