Best Carb For Performance

Please post your opinions on the best carb for performance.

1. CV 44
2. Mikuni HSR 42
3. S&S Super E

I know we all love the S&S air filter but this is for performance only.

Its a Harley Evo motor with Scremin Eagle Heads so it's likely to have a hot cam.

The CV 44 is currently fitted. Would the Mikuni or the Super E make any significant difference?

Thanks.

The Mik 42 will give you more "snap."

Never fooled with CV or Mikuni, always S&S,but have read that there is not a real big difference.Your CV carb should do all you want and then some, just get up to speed on tweaking it.No matter what you run for a carb there will be tweaking involved.Good Luck

Depends on what your looking for.

All out drag racing?
Torque and throttle response?

What kind of engine mods do you currently have?
Do you intend to do more radical mods later?
Lots of questions need to be answered before anyone can tell you this one is the best or that one.

SE heads are very mild and just barely flow better than stock.
SE cams are mild also.
If you plan to leave your engine mods as they are, go with the Mikuni.
It will take care of the SE stuff and will tune up better / quicker than the S&S will.
You'll have to drop a few dollars into the S&S to get the midrange the Mik will put out.

I use the bike on the street so improved torque and throttle response would be great. I wont rule out more radical mods in time but don't want to compromise reliability.

I dont know the engine size. It was one of three bikes someone bought when a shop that was closing down. The guy I bought it from has no information on it and as said, the shop closed down.

Given the Sceamin Eagle head and CV44 carb, the main jet is 220 and pilot jet 50, would a standard 80 with head work run on those jets? If not would it have an upgrade kit???

Wondering if a different carb would make much difference and if so which one to go for?

I'm trying to avoid pulling the head, it would really suck if it turns out the cam has been done already and there's no where else to go. Whilst on this subject what's the best cam?

Thanks again

It's hard to imagine anyone would put SE heads on and not add a hot cam at the same time. SE heads and SE cams go well together. The SE 57 cam has .570 lift. Not so mild at all. That's the combo on my 80" 2000 FXR4 along with a number of other parts, mostly SE. 92 hp at the rear wheel. I run a Mikuni 42mm and it's real easy to tune. Great transition too. Your CV44 is a good carb too if set up right. If I had to chose between the two I'd take the Mikuni in the blink of an eye but since you already have the CV44 I'd stick with that. S&S are butterfly carbs and not as efficient as the other two although a lot of guys love 'em.

I hear the carb would have to be re-jetted if it had a hot cam. The main jet is 220 and pilot jet 50 so it does have oversize jets. It also has a SE high flow air cleaner.

With this set up and SE heads could any one take a guess at what cam / degree of duration might be in it.

I know its a big guess but i'd be pretty pissed if I pulled the head and found it already has something like a SE 57 cam already.

Mike, what other parts do you have to get 92 hp?
